Japanese study: Drinking coffee and green tea daily can prevent stroke

Japanese studies have shown that daily consumption of coffee and green tea can prevent stroke, published in Ame-rican Heart Association's journal Stroke (Stroke Journal of the American Heart Association). The study recruited more than 80,000 men and women aged between 45 and 74, and the survey lasted for 13 years, said Dr. Yoshihiro Okubo of the National Cardiovascular Center in Japan.

The study found that people who drank two or three cups of green tea a day had a 14% lower risk of stroke than those who did not drink green tea at all, and those who drank more than four cups of green tea a day had a lower risk of stroke.
In the case of cerebral hemorrhagic stroke, people who drank one cup of green tea a day also had a lower risk of stroke, while those who drank more than four cups of green tea a day reduced their risk of stroke by 35%.
As for coffee, another drink, people who drink more than three cups of coffee a week have a more than 10% lower risk of stroke than those who don't drink coffee at all, especially for ischemic stroke, if they drink more than one cup of coffee a day. Stroke risk is reduced by as much as 20%.
It is possible that substances in green tea or coffee that protect blood vessels or suppress blood sugar levels reduce the risk of stroke, according to Dr. Okubo's team.
