The International Journal of Hepatology reported that three cups of coffee a day halved the risk of death for patients with HIV and HCV.
The International Journal of Hepatology (Journal of Hepatology) recently announced the results of a five-year study that highlights the important impact of behaviors such as coffee drinking and non-smoking on the survival of people living with HIV.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) double infection is a particularly high incidence of advanced liver disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer. HIV infection accelerates the progression of chronic hepatitis B, leading to fibrosis, cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. According to this report, HIV-HCV doubly infected people who drink more than three cups of coffee a day can reduce the death rate by half.
In this paper, the effect of coffee intake on the risk of death caused by viral double infection was discussed for the first time. "HCV is now a curable viral infection," said Dr. Dominique Salmon- C é ron of the University of Paris V, who led the project. "however, even after HCV is cured, patients who are co-infected with HIV have a higher risk of death. The causes of death may be accelerated aging mediated by cancer, diabetic complications, liver disease, and cardiovascular emergencies. "
It is well known that coffee has anti-inflammatory and liver-protective properties. The mortality rate of the general population who drank three or more cups of coffee a day was 14% lower than that of the general population. This may be because the polyphenols in coffee can protect the liver and fight inflammation.
Over the past five years, researchers followed 1028 patients with HIV-HCV double infection through the French National ANRS CO13-HEPAVIH Project to collect medical and psychological / behavioral data.
In the sample, 1/4 reported drinking at least three cups of coffee a day, with a total of 77 deaths within five years, with hepatitis C being the leading cause of death.
After taking into account HCV virus clearance, HIV and HCV related factors, stable partners, non-smoking, healthy living and other factors, patients who drank at least 3 cups of coffee a day had a 50% lower risk of death after HCV clearance.
The study highlighted the role of individual behavior in reducing the risk of death, especially coffee intake and non-smoking behavior. Taking into account coffee consumption, patients with coffee intolerance can also gain anti-inflammatory benefits by consuming decaf.
"although the cure of hepatitis C is fundamental, our findings show that action changes are needed to improve the health and survival of people living with HIV, regardless of whether HCV is cleared or not. We believe that coffee, drinking, smoking, physical activity and other behaviors should be considered, and related studies can help patients to take appropriate intervention measures. Patients with caffeine intolerance should also consider increasing their daily intake of several cups of decaf, "Dr. Salmon- C é ron said." in summary, I think dietary supplements of coffee extracts and other anti-inflammatory compounds should be further evaluated to improve the survival of patients with HIV-HCV infection.
