Coffee is good for health, eye protection, weight loss, blood pressure, all because of this antioxidant: chlorogenic acid.

The World Health Organization has lowered the carcinogenic level of coffee, which has been in use for 25 years, from level 2B, which may cause human cancer (possibly carcinogenic to humans), to level 3, which cannot be classified as a human carcinogen (not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans).

At the same time, more and more studies have shown that drinking coffee actually has more advantages than disadvantages for ordinary people, and its health benefits range from reducing diabetes to preventing cancer. However, the effect of coffee on the eyes is rarely mentioned.

A study by Cornell University found that chlorogenic acid (chlorogenic acid), rich in coffee, may protect retinal cells.

The retina is located in the inner layer of the eyeball and consists of a layer of photosensitive cells and other nerve cells that receive and organize visual images for recognition by the brain. The retina is also one of the most metabolically active tissues in the body.

The researchers point out that the retina consumes oxygen even faster than the brain, and phenomena caused by oxidative stress, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, can lead to blindness.

However, they found in animal experiments that chlorogenic acid, one of the main substances in coffee, can reduce the apoptosis of retinal nerve cells caused by hypoxia and excessive nitric oxide.

The researchers explained that the antioxidant effect of chlorogenic acid may be one of the reasons for reducing retinal cell death. As a result, they conclude that drinking coffee may prevent retinal degeneration.

The study is published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry).

In addition to preventing retinal degeneration, chlorogenic acid in coffee has the following little-known benefits:

Lose weight

In a human experiment in the International Journal of Medicine (Journal of International Medical Research), subjects who ate coffee with high levels of chlorogenic acid lost an average of 5.4kg after 12 weeks, while those who drank less chlorogenic acid lost an average of 1.7kg.

In terms of body fat, the group with more chlorogenic acid in coffee decreased by an average of 3.6%, while the group with lower chlorogenic acid intake decreased by an average of 0.7%.

Lower blood pressure

In an experiment in patients with mild hypertension in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypertension (Clinical and Experimental Hypertension), one group was given chlorogenic sour coffee extract, while the control group was given a placebo. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the coffee chlorogenic acid group, while there was no significant decrease in blood pressure in the placebo group.

Protect the nerve

The Journal of Life Science (Life Sciences) found that chlorogenic acid seems to have a protective effect on motor nerves. It is pointed out that when glutamate accumulates too much in cells, it will be toxic to nerve cells, and chlorogenic acid can reduce this toxicity, thus having a protective effect on nerve cells.

But there are two things to remind you.

If you want to get the most chlorogenic acid from coffee, it is best to drink light-roasted coffee, because the content of chlorogenic acid decreases with the roasting time. Heavy-roasted coffee lowers the content of chlorogenic acid, and the body doesn't get these benefits.

In addition, studies have shown that staying up late to drink coffee can lead to high intraocular pressure and increase the risk of glaucoma, so in addition to drinking light-roasted coffee, you also need to pay attention to the timing of drinking.
