According to the International Coffee Organization, as of 1990, Kenya was synchronized with Uganda and Ethiopia in coffee production, but from the early 1990s to the 11th harvest year in 2010, the acreage of Kenyan coffee decreased by 35%. Coffee production fell to 45000 tons in 2016 and 17, mainly due to mismanagement.

In contrast, Uganda has not only increased investment in coffee cultivation, its Coffee Development Bureau has also implemented a transplant programme, with Uganda producing 5.2 million packets (60 kg each) and exporting 4.6 million bales in 2017, making it Africa's leading coffee exporter and second-largest coffee producer.

In Ethiopia, coffee production is expected to remain unchanged at 7.1 million bales (about 426000 tons) and exports are expected to be 3.98 million bales (about 239000 tons) in the 2018 August 19 (October-September) harvest year compared with the previous year.

The Kenya Coffee Commission believes that the decline in the performance of its coffee industry is mainly due to poor investment, corruption in the coffee industry, poor sales channels and other reasons.
