In China, more and more people who do not drink coffee are slowly beginning to accept this drink, and even the demand for it is growing. Tea used to be the mainstream in our country, and it gradually became brown.
In 1989, Nestl é launched "1-2" instant coffee in China; in 1998, Starbucks, a world-class coffee chain, entered China; and in 2018, Luckin Coffee opened and expanded wildly. China's coffee industry, no matter who seems to have entered an era of scuffle.
On the 17th, Euromonitor, a specialist in commodity and market data research, gave an analysis of the global coffee market (2007-2018 outlook). In this analysis, we can see that coffee consumption in China, which has been much lower than in most countries in the world, ranks second in the annual sales of coffee provided by coffee shops (chain coffee shops, etc.).
The analysis shows that the highest annual sales of coffee (chain coffee shops, etc.) offered by coffee shops are in the United States, where annual sales are $26.1 billion (provisional 2018). This overwhelming advantage has not changed from 2007 to 2018. The second place is China, which is worth $5.1 billion, and the third is South Korea, both of which are growing unusually fast.
According to the "Coffee Industry Market demand and Investment Analysis report" released by the prospective Industrial Research Institute, the annual per capita coffee consumption in North American and European countries is about 400 cups, while that in Japan is about 360 cups. At present, the average person in China consumes less than five cups of coffee per year.
However, in China's first-tier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, per capita coffee consumption has reached 20 cups a year. China's coffee consumption is growing at 15% 20% a year, while the global average coffee consumption is growing at only 2%.
Despite the rapid growth of China's coffee market, the harshness can be seen in things such as the closure of coffee brands and the mass closure of coffee. Whether it is instant coffee, chain coffee shops or boutique coffee shops in the corners of big cities, they all have to struggle to survive against this backdrop of prosperity.
