A few days ago, the Coffee Alliance of Excellence (ACE), a non-profit organization that conducted a preliminary COE trial in the town of Takengon in Aceh, Indonesia, announced that the pilot program has been completed and plans to expand to the whole of Indonesia by 2020.
In 2018, ACE held 12 COE competitions in 11 different coffee producing countries. COE is one of the most famous competitions in the coffee industry. The competition selects high-quality coffee through strict judges and puts it on the global online auction house for bidding.
Although Indonesia is the third largest Arabica coffee producer in the world, ACE has never hosted COE in this country. For decades, the country's diverse island environment, unique geographical differences and unique production and processing methods have attracted many buyers who are willing to pay high prices for high-quality coffee.
The international judges evaluated more than 40 batches of coffee beans provided by individual coffee farmers.
"due to its high production, different production areas formed by multiple islands, as well as production and processing methods, processes and coffee bean varieties, Indonesia is committed to becoming a challenging and promising new coffee producer that will have an impact on the COE portfolio," ACE said in a statement to the COE pilot project.
ACE recently completed the COE pilot project in the town of Takengon in North Sumatra in cooperation with the Indonesian Fine Coffee Association and the local AcehTenga government.
A panel of international coffee professionals from China, Australia, Sumatra, Colombia, the Netherlands, Australia, the United States, Singapore and South Korea evaluated more than 40 coffee beans provided by individual coffee farmers. According to the auction results announced by ACE, 4 lots scored more than 88 points, while 20 lots scored more than 84 points and were available for auction.
Wet-planed Ateng Super coffee beans from the Lot Tawar region scored the highest score (88.84 points) in the pilot competition, as well as the highest auction price of $18.14 per pound for buyers from Medan, Indonesia.
Interestingly, there are six different processing methods in the top ten coffee beans.
"many farmers who entered the selection program have changed the public's stereotype that Indonesian coffee is only treated with wet planing," ACE said. "International judges from different countries have been tasting varieties of tanning, honey and washing treatments, such as Abyssinia, Gayo 1, Gayo, 2, P8, and S795, as well as other well-known varieties, such as Ateng Jeluk,Tim Tim and Bor Bor."
