KOPAKAMA CWS
KOPAKAMA refers to the agricultural coffee cooperative in Mabanza (formerly a country in western Rwanda). The country has been rezoned as a region, but the name still exists.
Founded in 1998 with only 48 members, Kopakama has been growing high-quality full-water Arabica coffee beans, with mountains on the back and the sparkling waters of Lake Kivu from the mountains down. Farmers invest their profits from coffee sales in the construction of their micro-washing stations.
Today, Kopakama has more than 600 members, uses two washing stations (one full-washing station and one micro-washing station), grows and handles their coffee beans skillfully, and employs trained cup surveyors. The typical plot area is 0.5 to 2 hectares.
Farmers in Kopakama are committed to improving local communities. So far, they have introduced gravity water to serve the community and used fair trade premiums to get electricity. They also bought the conference hall of the co-operative. Their vision is to bring more stable prices and markets for their coffee.
