Illubabor forest
The selection of this disease-resistant variety was discovered in the Illubabor Coffee Forest in 1974.
Illubabor is a variety that is highly flavored in the United States and Europe and stands out for its jasmine, honey and passion fruit flavors. The palate is sweet, with notes of melon and honey.
The couple of estate owners in Ruoxia Village studied the wild varieties collected during the expedition, looking for the following characteristics to determine which are "good plants": a) showing disease resistance; b) high cup test quality; and c) good yield.
The variety Illubabor was part of the Jima Agricultural Research Center in Ethiopia in 1974. The center studies wild varieties collected from Ethiopian forests to look for disease resistance, high quality cups and good yields. The heirloom comes from samples collected in the wild in the Gori Gesha forest.
Illubabor is from the village of Gesha-but it's not Art Coffee and Panama. Part of the work of the Gima Research Centre involves exploring possible links between a Panamanian geisha and the area around the Gori Gesha Forest. Genetic research is under way to find a further link between the two and to clarify the history of these heirloom varieties.
