Sir Nicholas Rawls, governor of 1728, obtained a coffee plant from the governor of Martinique and immediately planted it in the St. Andrews area. Production was restricted in the first half of this century, but as coffee cultivation expanded from St. Andrews to the Blue Mountains, it flourished in 686 plantations. By 1814, Jamaica's annual production at its peak was more than 16500 tons, compared with 30 tons in 1752.
It was the heyday of Jamaican coffee. But due to labor shortages, production began to decline, and by 1850, only 180 plantations were still in production. Quality problems began to emerge at the end of the century, leading to a plan to improve quality and infrastructure, with little success. By 1944, a central coffee clearinghouse was established to transport all coffee, followed by the Jamaica Coffee Agency in 1950.
Rapid development to the present: although the journey is not very fast, coffee quality and shrewd marketing have made Jamaica synonymous with clean, sweet professional coffee before many other producing countries. Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is considered to be the best coffee in the world.
