Types of Ceylon tea
Although some Sri Lankan producers are expanding their product range to include green tea and other types of tea, most Ceylon tea is black tea. There are seven tea-growing areas in Sri Lanka, and Ceylon tea is classified according to three different elevations: high altitude (above 4000 feet), medium altitude (between 2000 and 4000 feet) and low altitude (sea level to 2000 feet).
Nuwala Helias: Nuwara Helias is the highest tea producing area in Sri Lanka. It is also located in the center of the island, west of Uva and north of Dimbula. Its local conditions make the tea with exquisite floral aroma and refreshing taste. Nuwara Eliya's high-altitude tea is a special iced tea or lemon tea.
Uva is a highly cultivated tea and is perhaps the most famous tea-growing area in Sri Lanka. It is located in central Sri Lanka, east of Nuwara Eliya and Dimbula. Black tea from the Uva region has a unique sweetness and wood aroma and can handle a little milk. Some white tea is also produced from Uva.
Dinbura (or Danbra): Dinbura is a tea-growing area in central Sri Lanka. It is the southernmost of the three famous areas. As a hillside area, the topography varies greatly with altitude. Some teas are mellow, while others are subtle, but most of them have a mellow taste.
Udapu Serrava: Wudapu Serrava is near Nuwala Helias, which is an area of heavy rainfall. Its tea is similar to Nuwara Eliya's, but it is darker in color, pinkish and more full-bodied.
Candy: candy is a medium-altitude area that produces medium-growing tea, and the taste of the tea depends on the degree of exposure to the monsoon. This kind of tea is usually mellow, malted and copper-colored.
Luhanna and Sabaragamuwa: Luhanna and Sabaragamuwa are low-altitude areas that produce low-growth black tea with rich, orange and red flavors with flavors of honey, chocolate and caramel. Most of the tea in these areas is processed into orange white tea and flower orange white tea.
