As early as 1824, the British brought a kind of tea tree from China to Ceylon (then Sri Lanka). It is planted in the Royal Botanical Garden Peradeniya and is considered to be the first non-commercial tea tree in Sri Lanka.

In 1867, James Taylor (James Taylor) of Scottish descent planted 19 acres of tea in Kandy, ylon. Loolecondra Estate was the first commercial tea garden. Lulondra tea was finally sold in Kandy in 1872 and the first batch of tea was shipped to London in 1873. These pioneering efforts have been accomplished through trial and error and have been continuously improved through the introduction and improvement of tea processing machines and methods by different individuals and companies.

The first brokerage firm, John Brothers & co, was founded in 1876 and the first public Colombo auction was held in 1883 under the guidance of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (founded in 1839). The Colombo Tea Trade Association was established in 1894 and the Tea Institute was established in 1925. These organizations promoted the early production and export of Ceylon tea.
