Folk tea sells handmade tea sets and tea cloth. Can you tell us how this process began? What do you want your customers to get from the handmade experience? Subhasish: I've been crazy about ceramics since I was in college, but I haven't had the right job opportunities. Later, one of our friends, Pranav, helped us make pottery in his studio. In Chinese tradition, ceramics are used to make tea. Assam, by contrast, uses metals, not ceramics. Traditionally, ceramics are mainly used to make curds, while those jars are handmade, completely handmade and do not use wheels. Ceramics are relatively new products; historically, there are only bell metal utensils for drinking tea. Recently, Kohuwa Collective and I set up a small pottery workshop in Assam, where people can try to make pottery. Many people here have begun to use ceramics, that is, unglazed pots to maintain curd. We want to teach and learn together and create some economic benefits for the growers' families so that they can make tea sets and make extra profits. We hope to establish a concept of combining tea and ceramic tea sets in Assam.

The people of Assam like to weave; almost everyone in the village weaves their own cloth. There is a kind of stool called gamusha, which is a traditional fabric from Assam. Assam has a long history of knitting, and many tea farmers' families are engaged in knitting. We provide cotton thread and financial assistance to women who make tea towels, and we sell these tea towels in online stores. When customers buy our tea and tea towels, they add extra income to the grower's family, and anything extra will bring smiles and hope to our people. We are trying to record a pamphlet on how the tea ceremony works in Assam and why tea ceremony culture is no longer practiced in the modern way of life. It is not a complete, independent ceremony like the tea ceremony in China or Japan, but here, the tea ceremony is closer to community gatherings and gatherings in prayer halls, called Naamghar. Ghar is the house, and naam is the prayer written in the holy book of Assam culture, by Shri Shri Shankar Dev, who launched the new Vishnu movement across the country. There is a book written by Assam philosopher, the prayer hall is the place where people gather, read this book, and then pray; the tea ceremony is in the teahouse. Before and at the end of the prayer, the way the tea is placed, the tableware, and the banana leaves are all very special. Athletes have a table in China and Japan for tea ceremonies (tea banquets) in Assam, where cloth is replaced with a banana leaf. This is an ancient culture. So we try to record it and make people realize that there is a little-known tea ceremony in Assam. Like knitting and rituals, it is part of a project to help growers get more money to increase financial stability.
