As the second most traded commodity in the world, coffee has a large number of consumers. In China, where tea originated, the scale of its coffee market is increasing year by year. Because coffee has the function of refreshing and improving work efficiency, it is very popular among migrant workers.

As people drink more and more coffee, people begin to care about the health benefits of the coffee they consume. More and more scientific studies have shown that coffee may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, cancer and other diseases, and more and more scientific studies have shown that there is a correlation between coffee intake and the risk of death.

However, in many past studies, no distinction has been made between sugar-free coffee and coffee with sweetened / artificial sweeteners. In daily life, the bitterness of black coffee is not acceptable to everyone, and many friends who have just tasted black coffee usually add sugar to it. So, what is the effect of sweetened coffee on health?

On May 31, 2022, Professor Mao Chen of Southern Medical University published a research paper entitled "Association of Sugar-Sweetened,Artificially Sweetened, and Unsweetened Coffee Consumption With All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality" in the Journal of Internal Medicine Yearbook (Annals of Internal Medicine).

The study explored the relationship between unsweetened coffee, sweetened coffee and coffee with artificial sweeteners and all-cause mortality and specific causes of death.

In the study, the researchers analyzed 171616 participants in the UK Biological Bank (UK Biobank) database who did not have cardiovascular disease or cancer.

The analysis of the data from the health behavior questionnaire showed that among the 171616 participants, their ages ranged from 37 to 73 years old. 130132 (75.8%) were coffee consumers, 55.4% of the participants drank sugar-free coffee most frequently, 14.3% of the participants drank sweetened coffee the most, and 6.1% of the participants drank coffee with artificial sweeteners most often.

During the 7-year follow-up period, a total of 3177 deaths were recorded, including 1725 from cancer and 628 from cardiovascular disease.

The data showed that there was a significant U-shaped association between unsweetened coffee and sweetened coffee and all-cause mortality, while the association between coffee with artificial sweeteners and mortality was not consistent.

Drinking unsweetened coffee significantly reduced the risk of death compared with no coffee, with the highest reduction of 29% among those who drank 2.5 to 3.5 cups or 3.5 to 4.5 cups a day.

Drinking sweetened coffee also reduced the risk of death compared with no coffee, with the highest reduction of 21% among those who drank 1.5 to 2.5 cups a day. For people who drank more than 4.5 cups a day, the risk of death increased by 5%.

This is a happy event for friends who like to add sugar to their coffee. However, don't be happy so early. If you like sugary coffee (such as toffee latte or caramel macchiato), sweetened coffee has nothing to do with reducing the risk of death.

In the study, the researchers also analyzed the records of participants who drank sweetened coffee and found that adults who drank sweetened coffee only added about 1 teaspoon of sugar per cup of coffee. the average sugar content is much lower than that of drinks sold by popular coffee chains.
