If you ask where the city with the highest coffee concentration in China is, different people have different answers. Before this year, many people had the same answer-Shanghai. However, due to the epidemic, the catering industry in Shanghai has been away from eating for nearly three months. More brands are no longer pushing Modu, but are rushing to Chengdu.

According to the cumulative value of the industry from January to April disclosed by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics, retail sales of the accommodation and catering industry in Shanghai fell by 39.5% in March and 72.5% in April compared with the same period last year. In Shanghai, restaurant food has been closed for nearly three months, and the catering industry has been hit hard. Many people in the catering industry expect that in the past, at least 30% of the restaurants in Shanghai will close down, the capital chain will be broken and the payment of raw materials will be defaulted.

Caixin's Wechat official account published an article entitled "many restaurants and cafes are closed, but they are busier and busier" on July 17, describing the alternative busyness that Shanghai's food and beverage loneliness has brought to the waste recycling industry. Workers engaged in food and beverage equipment recycling in Shanghai are stacked with all kinds of second-hand catering equipment in their 1800 square meters warehouse, such as ovens, coffee machines, ice makers. It is reported that these devices are basically recycled in the past six months.

In contrast, in Chengdu, data show that Chengdu currently has more than 7000 cafes, ranking second in the country. Since the beginning of this year, there have been frequent reports of luxury brands huddling to open coffee shops, hoping to grab a piece of China's growing and hot coffee market. The difference is that luxury brands in luxury coffee shops in China play the role of "guide" in luxury consumption, so that more people can afford luxury brands.

LV caf é in January, Cartier Teahouse in April, Ralph's Bar in May, Maision Margiela Caf é in June, and so on. In the upsurge of Gaohe brands scrambling to open coffee shops, it is not difficult to find that Gaoshe brands are interested in the Chinese coffee market and no longer go to Shanghai to open stores, but choose Chengdu.

To some extent, Chengdu is the second largest coffee consumer city in the country after Shanghai. The number of Starbucks stores in a city reflects not only the economic vitality of a city, but also the investment value of a city. In 2021, the number of Starbucks stores in Shanghai will be about 1200, while that in Chengdu will be about 210.

Although more and more big-name coffee shops choose to open shops in Chengdu, there are also many independent cafes hidden on the streets of Chengdu.

Chengdu's "Independent Coffee Shop Index" unexpectedly overtook Shanghai. In 2021, the Shanghai Coffee consumption Index released by the New first-tier City Research Institute showed that independent cafes accounted for 57.01% in Shanghai and 81.07% in Chengdu. According to the Chengdu Coffee takeout consumption report 2021 released by Meituan, the number of coffee merchants in Chengdu grew by 59% in 2021 compared with the same period last year, leading the country.

Wangping Street, Mengchuwan Street, Palladium Street and Xiaotong Lane in Chengdu are all "Coffee Street" with a large number of fans both inside and outside the province. Among them, Wangping Riverside Road has more than 70 business owners, of which cafes and shops with coffee sales account for about 70%. Fangcao Street, Yulin Road, Chengdu, is jokingly called "Little Shanghai" by people in Chengdu due to the increasing number of coffee shops.

Compared with the simple and high-end style of Shanghai Cafe, Chengdu Cafe also has a unique style in space and taste. Chengdu has a long history of teahouse culture, and the transformation of old residential areas has led to the rise of coffee in many streets and creative parks in Chengdu. Drinking tea and coffee while basking in the sun has become a new standard for many people in Chengdu.
