"the results of this year's Best Panamanian Raw Bean Competition (BOP) are out!" I believe that after hearing the news recently, many friends also checked the award-winning manor and the ranking at the first time.

In addition to the final result of the competition, this year's competition also has a "melon" who shocked the judges and broke the historical record, which I would like to share with you.

Let's briefly introduce the BOP (Best of Panama Best Panama) Coffee Raw Bean Competition. Friends who know well can skip and go straight to the topic.

The theme of this year's event is "We are Regions" (our region). Through the theme of the event, the Panamanian Fine Coffee Association hopes to further convey the importance of environmental protection and to understand that a good coffee is inseparable from the hard work of coffee growers / producers.

Since the end of last year, bad weather has occurred one after another in Central and South America, and coffee producing areas in many countries have been affected to varying degrees. The bad weather not only damaged many coffee trees, but also damaged the roots of many surviving coffee trees with the increase of Rain Water in the later stage, affecting the yield and quality of coffee in the later stage. The yield and flavor of coffee are inseparable from the roots of coffee trees. Only when enough roots absorb enough nutrients can more flowers and fruits bloom and bear more fruits.

In addition to the impact of wind disasters and the increase in Rain Water, climate warming has prevented many coffee trees from "playing their cards according to common sense". Not only do they blossom and bear fruit ahead of time, but the fruit ripens faster in previous years, but this is not a good phenomenon. Although the coffee fruit is ripe, the nutrition of the fruit will be less than that of the ripe fruit at a reasonable time, and the flavor of the coffee beans will be inferior.

As a result, the number of samples participating in the BOP competition this year has also decreased from 169 + in previous years to 133, and many estates are unfortunately unable to participate in this year's competition because of insufficient production / quality as expected. Although the number of samples decreased, many of them performed very well! Among the contestants this time, the final average score of 4 rosy summer group samples was more than 95 points, including one sun group rosy summer group, and a judge gave 100 points!

In addition, among the samples of the traditional group in this competition, many judges shared their names on the social platform after the cup test and the preliminary announcement of the results. a sample of a variety that is not Rosa got a high score of 94 (also broke the record of high score in the traditional group history)! The complex fragrance of flowers and fruit amazed the judges present, and some judges worried about whether the samples of the rose group were mixed into the traditional group.

Obviously, no! In the end, this sample also became the champion of the traditional (multi-variety) group, a Chicho Gayo/Gallo coffee bean from Hartman Manor. According to the owner of Hartmann Manor after the game, this is a coffee tasting plant from the Amara gayo region of Ethiopia, and the variety name is taken by members of the Hartman family in the later period.

Chicho Gayo's "ancestor", like the rose summer variety (not specifically referred to as T2722), was sent by Ethiopia in the 1930s as a regular exchange variety to laboratories around the world for breeding and research. In the 1960s, research laboratories around the world had crossbred hundreds of excellent coffee varieties and began to allow growers from all regions to introduce their own countries for further cross-breeding.

However, Chicho Gayo is not a variety from these laboratories, it is a hybrid product of these varieties. The owner of the Hartman manor also said that the variety is a new variety developed by the Hartman family through cross-pollination for 15 years, and the mother breed is a variety with natural genetic changes in order to adapt to the Panamanian region.

After a breed is cultivated, it is not amazing from the beginning. Its discovery is the same as when the jadeite manor owner Daniel discovered the rose summer, it is through constant cup test and comparison every year to find, and boldly show its charm to the world, so that it has today's fame.

Thus it can be seen that the really good coffee that can amaze everyone will not come out of nowhere. Its excellence is inseparable from the variety, the right place at the right time, and the efforts made by the growers behind it.

Hartman owners said they had submitted samples of Chicho Gayo coffee for the competition last year, and the selection of BOP was amazed by the flavor of the beans. However, because the overall flavor is too close to the Rosa variety, it is suspected that the suspected Rosa flavor was added to the samples of the traditional group, and the Chicho Gayo samples were disqualified for fear of being unfair to other samples.

图片

But this year, Hartman Manor submitted a genetic comparison between the Chicho Gayo and Rosa varieties to ensure that the varieties were not controversial, and the BOP judges realized that it was not only Rosa varieties that had an attractive floral flavor, so this year Chicho Gayo varieties were allowed to participate in the competition in the traditional group.

The flavor of this year's Chicho Gayo coffee is similar to that of Rosa Coffee, the champion of the Emerald Manor in 2004. The champion rose summer has the flavor of rose, bergamot, mango and black tea, while this year's Chicho Gayo coffee shows the flavor of rose, jasmine, yellow peach, bergamot and so on.

Some operators have discussed that the Chicho Gayo variety may be able to surpass the rose summer variety, while others are worried about the future of the rose summer variety. In fact, there is no conflict between the two. Only by constantly breaking through the defined "ceiling" can there be more development of boutique coffee.

With the emergence of Rose Summer, more people began to try shallow roasting, and they also felt more levels of coffee flavor, but it did not affect the demand for deep-roasted coffee beans. The emergence of individual coffee has made more people willing to try pure coffee, but it has not affected the demand for espresso.

There is no need to worry too much about the future of Rosa Coffee. As the times move forward iteratively, so will the gods of the times.
