In the early morning of August 30, a British netizen shared a notice posted by a local Starbucks store saying, "from October 1 this year, we will accept payment by credit card, mobile phone or using Starbucks programs." Later, a British media also said that another Starbucks store had posted the same notice.
As two Starbucks stores posted the same notice, many netizens thought that not accepting cash was Starbucks' unified decision and that it was unreasonable, so the related topic was widely discussed.
Many netizens believe that although more and more people use electronic payment, it does not mean that everyone will use it, and many people still retain the habit of using cash. In the evening, Starbucks UK officials also responded on the social platform that: Starbucks stores in the UK are run by a number of franchise partners, so some decisions will only be made by the stores. Starbucks has no plans for cashless action, so most stores will still accept cash payments.
According to the US CNBC media report in 2018, Starbucks has tested whether it will have an impact on the customer's consumption experience if it does not support cash payment in some stores in the United States. But the test was not widely promoted at that time.
The decision was made at the time because Kevin Johnson, former chief executive of Starbucks, said that 30 per cent of payments in US Starbucks stores were made through mobile phones and 40 per cent through Star Value (similar to Starbucks cards) because of more discounts / rewards. The use of electronic payment in China is as high as 60%.
In order to reduce the risk of contracting the virus due to the use of cash, Starbucks began to introduce more rewards and discounts under contactless payments after the outbreak began in 2020, but did not say that it did not support cash payments. Starbucks is also making it clear that "cash is also an option."
