Coffee development in Guatemala

Guatemala is located in the southern part of the North American continent, bordering Mexico, Honduras, Belize and El Salvador. All over Guatemala are 2/3 mountains and plateaus, with the Kuchu Matanes Mountains in the west and the Madre Mountains in the south, all of which belong to volcanic belts with more than 30 volcanoes. Guatemala has tropical rain forests, volcanic soil and a changeable microclimate, bringing elegant and lively acidity, clean odor-free and layered coffee flavor to Guatemalan coffee beans.

In the mid-18th century, Jesuits brought coffee trees to Antigua, and by the early 19th century, Guatemalans had a record of drinking coffee. But Guatemala's main cash crop at the time was fuel indigo, but its exports were later weakened by locusts and the emergence of artificial dyes. In order to revive the economy, the Guatemalan government began to encourage the cultivation of other crops such as coffee. Later, in 1856, coffee became an important crop in Guatemala, and in 1960 the National Coffee Association (ANCAFE) was established to help strengthen the national economy in terms of coffee production and exports.

New Oriental production area Nuevo Oriente

Coffee is grown in 20 of Guatemala's 22 provinces. Eight of them are well-known, divided into five volcanic producing areas and three non-volcanic producing areas, and coffee is planted at an average elevation of more than 1500 meters. Non-volcanic areas include Vivette Nanguo (Huehuetenango), Coban (Coban) and New Oriental (Nuevo Oriente). Volcanic areas include Atitlan, Antigua, Acatenango, Fraijanes and San Marcos. Among them, Vivette Nanguo and Antigua are more famous, Qianjie Coffee currently has a Flower God coffee bean from Antigua producing area, and an entry-selected Guatemalan coffee bean is from Vivette Nan fruit producing area. But the recent New Oriental producing areas also have a good performance.

New Oriental is located in eastern Guatemala, adjacent to Honduras, New Oriental Nuevo Oriente is the youngest coffee producing area, only in the 1950s began to grow coffee in this area. Rain Water is abundant in this area all the year round, with an altitude of 1500-2050 meters above sea level, so the area is always shrouded in mist, the sunshine time is relatively short, and it will be wetter than other producing areas. New Oriental was once one of the poorest and most isolated regions in Guatemala, because it was a volcanic area in ancient times, but it also led to the soil rich in minerals, coupled with the rich Rain Water and high altitude. The coffee beans produced here are quite complex and changeable in flavor.

Rosesia variety

The rose variety was discovered in Ethiopia in the 1930s, then introduced from Ethiopia to Tanzania in 1936, Costa Rica in 1953 and Panama from Costa Rica in 1970. But at that time, the pursuit of quantity did not seek quality, and the branches of Rosa plants were relatively thin, so they were not favored by farmers and were not widely planted. Later, the wave of boutique coffee made people begin to pay attention to the flavor and quality of coffee beans. In 2005, Jade Manor used rose summer varieties to participate in BOP competitions and bids. The bean became famous for its delicate floral, jasmine, peach and bergamot flavors and unusually high scores, and broke the auction record for coffee beans at the time, selling for more than $20 per list. This has attracted countless countries to introduce Rosa Rosa to grow at home, and Guatemala is one of them.
