They are not only a large stage for coffee people from all over the world to show their strength and technology, but also a weather vane to lead the trend of boutique coffee circles, but also promote the continuous innovation and progress of the industry.

I believe that if you love coffee, you must also be interested in these professional competitions. Qianjie is here to popularize science today. What are the world-class coffee competitions? What are they comparing to? Let's go ~

World Barista Competition (WBC)

As the "top card" of the seven major events hosted by the World Coffee Championship (World Coffee Championships, referred to as WCC), WBC (World Barista Championship) is known as the "World Coffee Olympics". It is a coffee-making competition that tests the comprehensive ability of baristas and obtains international certification, and it is also one of the most concerned international coffee events.

Since the first WBC was successfully held in Monte Carlo, Morocco in 2000, more than 50 contestants (regional champions) selected from major competitions around the world have come to the same international stage to compete and communicate with each other every year. The purpose of the WBC competition is to discover and guide coffee trends, spread coffee culture, and provide a platform for professional baristas around the world to perform, compete and communicate.

Rules: within 15 minutes, contestants need to produce 4 cups of espresso, 4 cups of milk coffee and 4 cups of creative specialty coffee based on concentrate. At the same time fluently explain their own works and ideas. The judges scored the use of coffee equipment, the selection of coffee beans, the skills of making coffee, the taste and appearance of coffee products, and the creativity of creative coffee.

World Coffee Brewing Competition (WBrC)

WBrC (World Brewers Championship) is a competition to match the skill of coffee extraction by hand. The competition aims to bring baristas back to their roots, make a cup of high-quality black coffee for customers, and strive to improve the professional standard of handmade coffee extraction and service.

Rules: WBrC consists of two parts: specified cooking and optional cooking. In the designated brewing part, the contestants will use the same kind of cooked beans and make three cups of coffee with the same standard equipment. In the optional cooking, the contestants will use their own cooked beans and can choose different utensils for extraction. The fluency of the entire introduction, brewing and service process will be judged.

World draw Art Competition (WLAC)

Lahua, a coffee-making technique that allows countless people to fall into the pit, baristas use the classic combination of Italian concentrate and whisked milk to create a variety of exquisite patterns. WLAC (World Latte Art Championship), can be said to be the most artistic coffee competition, baristas not only to compete with innovative designs, but also to complete the specified conventional complex patterns, a comprehensive display of professional technology and artistic expression skills.

Rules: there are three rounds of the preliminary round, the semi-final and the finals. In the preliminaries, the contestants were asked to produce a flower for photographers to take pictures within 5 minutes, and the judges scored according to the photos. Then, according to the photo of the work provided before the competition, two cups of the same conventional flower and two cups of the same design are displayed in 8 minutes (carved needles are allowed). The rules of the semi-finals are similar to those of the finals, with six cups of flower drinks made within a specified period of time.

The judges will give a comprehensive score on the visual effect, creative expression, contrast, consistency of each group of patterns and pictures, as well as the overall typhoon performance of baristas. In addition, in order to ensure the fairness of the competition, the equipment and materials used in the competition are provided by the organizers, including Italian coffee machine, bean grinder, milk, coffee beans and so on.

World Coffee Roasting Competition (WCRC)

Qianjie has mentioned several times in the article that the suitable baking curve can not only maximize the essence of the bean itself, but also avoid some unpleasant defects and add flowers to the extraction scene. So baking plays a very important role in the whole coffee chain. Like other competitions, the World Baking Competition (World Coffee Roasting Championship) tests the choice of coffee beans and the perfection of the roasted flavor presented by contestants, usually roasters from all over the world and experienced baristas who combine production and baking.

Rules: WCRC is generally divided into three sections, including the on-the-spot performance of the contestants' evaluation of raw coffee beans, setting the optimal roasting curve for designated coffee beans, and the finished product of roasting coffee beans, which is a comprehensive test of the participants' baking experience and knowledge theory. The baked products will be tested blindly, and the cup test will be conducted by professional judges and the final score will be determined.

World Cup Test Competition (WCTC)

Perhaps many people have long heard the proper term "cup test" in the coffee industry, but they do not know that there is actually a global cup test contest, which is held in different countries and regions every year. In the World Cup Test Competition (World Cup Tasters Championship), contestants must show fast and accurate coffee identification ability, not only to examine the speed and skills of baristas, but also to distinguish their accuracy in distinguishing coffee flavor differences through the examination, in order to select the baristas with the best cup testing ability in the world.

Rule: the form of the cup test competition is to place three cups in a triangle, in which two cups are the same coffee and one cup is different. Contestants use their sense of smell, taste, observation and their own experience to identify a different cup of coffee as soon as possible. The contestant performance part also has a flavor description and customer service, which looks like an introduction show of boutique coffee beans.

There are eight sets of coffee in each round, and the top eight contestants with the highest accuracy and fastest speed will enter the next round of semi-finals. Finally, the top four in the semi-finals will advance to the finals to compete for the championship trophy of the current World Cup testing contest. It is further explained here on the front street that when two or more contestants have the correct answer and the same score, the one with the shortest time wins.

World Coffee and Spirit Competition (WCIGS)

Founded in 2022, the World Coffee and Spirits Competition (World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship) is a high-end stage that uses a variety of blending methods to combine coffee with different wines to create a unique mix of drinks.

Rules: the competition also has two rounds of the preliminary round and the final round. The preliminary contestants are required to use the spirits randomly selected by the organizers as the base within the specified time, and first make two cups of the same personality coffee. Then, the sponsor of the competition specially made a special drink with hot and cold drinks, a total of 4 cups.

The finalists are required to make 2 cups (hot or cold coffee and spirits-based drinks) + 2 cups of traditional Irish coffee within the same specified time. The raw materials of Irish coffee can only contain coffee, whisky, sugar and animal cream, and it is stipulated to use Irish coffee cups provided by the organizers. Finally, the present jury scores the drinks comprehensively from the point of view of the balance, flavor and commercial value of the drinks, and then combines the production skills of the contestants.

World Turkish Coffee Competition (TC/IC)

As the Qianjie article showed yesterday, the Turkish coffee maker (Cezve / Ibrik) is a cylindrical utensil specially made for brewing historic Turkish coffee, usually made of brass, with a long handle for hand-held mobile heating, the edge of the pot is designed to facilitate the pouring of liquid, and the user gets the brewed coffee by boiling many times.

In the eyes of industry practitioners, the World Turkish Coffee Competition (The Cezve Ibrik Championship) is a large-scale competition to promote traditional coffee culture and encourage baristas to add their own styles or elements to showcase ancient coffee production.

Rules: baristas need to use Turkish coffee pots to make 2 cups of basic black coffee (only water and coffee powder) and 2 cups of creative Turkish coffee within 15 minutes.

In addition to the above coffee competition hosted by the World Coffee Association (World Coffee Events), there are other themes of world-class coffee competitions held on time every year, so that baristas with skills can show their skills, such as the World siphon Pot Competition (World Siphonist Championship) and the World Philharmonic Competition (World Aeropress Championship) (WAC).
