Last Updated: 2024/07/27, It is understood that Indonesia is at the junction of the earth's structural plates, spanning Southeast Asia and Oceania, and is located at the intersection between the Eurasian, Indian, Australia, Pacific and Philippine Sea plates. It is understood that Indonesia is at the junction of the earth's structural plates, across Southeast Asia and Oceania, at the confluence of the Eurasian, Indian, Australian, Pacific and Philippine Sea plates, and is composed of many islands. Indonesia is also the country with the largest number of volcanoes in the world, with a total of 127 active volcanoes. Coupled with the extremely unstable geological structure, Indonesia is easily affected by volcanic activity and seismic activity.

Recently, according to the Indonesian Volcano and Geological Hazard Research Institute (PVMBG), the recent increase in volcanic activity in Indonesia, a number of volcanic eruptions, the impact is serious.

On April 8, local time, the Gunung Semeru volcano on the island of Java erupted several times in a row, with ash columns ranging from 500m to 700m. Then it erupted again on the morning of the 9th, and this time the ash column reached 1000 meters, and the eruption lasted for 110s.

Then, on the evening of April 10, the Halmahera Barat volcano on the island of Pulau Halmahera erupted with an ash column as high as 800m and lasted for 78 seconds, followed by the Gunung Sorikmarapi volcano on the island of Sumatra in the early hours of April 11th. Then it was quiet for a few days, and on the 16th, an earthquake occurred on an island near North Sulawesi Province, causing the Ruang volcano to erupt more than three times in a row. Then at noon on the 17th, the previously erupted Halmahera Barat volcano erupted again, and the ash column was as high as 2500 meters.

At present, local institutions have residents in the vicinity of the volcano area, many residents can only rely on relatives, or temporary accommodation in the government-set shelter, near the volcano airport announced temporary closure, a number of airlines cancel Indonesian flights. In addition, as more eruptions are expected to follow, the crater is required to ban any human activity within a six-kilometer radius, and agencies warn of the need to guard against the collapse of some mountains into the sea, which could trigger hot rock eruptions, hot clouds and tsunamis, and the authorities' alert level has been raised to the highest level.

Therefore, for coffee and other agricultural departments said that they are very worried that so many volcanic eruptions will have a serious impact on the agricultural industry. All because volcanic ash and volcanic materials directly pollute the air, water and soil, block sunlight and affect photosynthesis.

In addition, harmful gases released by volcanic eruptions, such as sulfur dioxide, will directly affect the growth of crops, and may also form acid rain, further endangering crops. Moreover, after a large amount of volcanic ash and aerosols enter the atmosphere, it can change the cloud distribution and reflectivity, and then affect the global and regional climate, resulting in drought or rainstorm weather.

According to local coffee producers, it is currently in the harvest period of Robusta, but due to the influence of weather and volcanic disasters, coffee production on some islands is expected to decrease by 20%, and the total national production will be reduced by 50%. In addition, due to drought in Vietnam, leading to global stock shortages in Robusta, the price of Robusta coffee has been rising recently, and now the poor production of Robusta in Indonesia may further push up the price of Robusta.
