Tesla launched its first electric pickup truck, Cybertruck, in 2019. The strange shape of its debut made the pickup attract countless people all over the world. At the end of last year, the futuristic Tesla pickup was officially handed over to consumers, with some eager to drive on the road to pay attention, while others rebuilt it into a mobile coffee shop.
According to Kron4 News on May 23, a Tesla electric pickup truck was parked at the Cupertino Farmers' Market (Cupertino Farmers' Market). The owners, Ming Wood and Mabel Yeung, used it as the power source for their coffee company Moonwake Coffee Roasters to make drinks from espresso machines loaded in the back seat and sell them to guests.
It is understood that Wood, formerly an engineer for Tesla, often felt a lot of pressure during his work in the company, so he set up a club in his office and bought coffee equipment with his colleagues to relieve the pressure of work by making coffee.
Unable to buy his favorite coffee beans, Wood began to bake his own coffee. In early 2020, he co-founded Moonwake Coffee Roasters with his wife, then working at Meta, to bake and sell small batches of coffee beans to his family and friends. In July last year, the two opened a coffee shop at the farmers' market and began to sell coffee drinks.
However, as the business of the farmers' market is getting better and the market demand is increasing, the couple's troubles also increase, and the biggest headache for them is that the farmers' market does not allow the use of generators. In order to use all kinds of equipment normally, Wood needs to recharge the mobile battery pack one day in advance, and then use fuel pickup trucks to send the equipment and mobile battery pack to the farmers' market in order to ensure the normal business of the coffee shop.
So in order to solve the power problem of the equipment, Wood thought of Tesla's electric pickup truck, "it is very suitable for the power equipment we want, and the electric pickup truck itself has many technical advantages that other trucks do not have."
First of all, electric pickups can provide the 240 volts required by most commercial coffee machines. Second, compared with traditional dining cars, electric pickups allow customers to see the coffee-making process without isolating them from baristas. Most importantly, the electric pickup truck itself is the most conspicuous signboard, as long as it appears in the farmers' market, it can help coffee shops attract more customers.
Wood said that some netizens had seen other people's sharing on Ins and had come all the way from Sacramento to see for themselves and have a cup of coffee.
However, the mobile coffee shop on the electric pickup truck still has many disadvantages: unable to provide indoor dining space, very dependent on the weather, and so on. In addition, although Tesla electric pickup truck has a strong eye attraction ability, it has a certain degree of controversy, which makes some people have a negative view of it, so they are unwilling to buy their coffee.
At present, both the couple have quit their previous jobs and focused on their current coffee business. They are considering taking advantage of the mobility of electric pickups to open a pop-up store in Yosemite and plan to open a coffee roaster in West San Jose by the end of the year.
