Recently, the results of the 2024 Excellence Cup competition held in Ethiopia have been announced. In this result, the sun treatment has won a complete victory, and among the many producing areas in Ethiopia, Sidamo sidama has the most outstanding performance.

In fact, as early as 2020, Ethiopia held the first COE competition and auction, of which 28 award-winning products generated a turnover of US $134. Then, at Ethiopia's COE auction in 2022, the price of Ethiopian coffee reached an all-time high of $400.5 (2899 yuan) per pound.

But in 2023, the Ethiopian left-wing PFDJ was dissatisfied with the new democratically elected government, so clashes broke out, which eventually led to civil war. The non-profit organization Coffee Excellence (ACE) suspended Ethiopia's COE in 2023 after discussing with the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority that there were serious problems in Ethiopia. This year, the Ethiopian government said it had stabilized the situation, so it decided to restart COE.

According to reports, in this year's COE competition in Ethiopia, a total of 500 participating coffees were received and 27 coffee with a score of more than 87 were selected. In this year's competition, unlike before, the 27 coffees selected this time are all sun-treated and are all digital.

In fact, a large number of digital varieties have appeared on the COE in Ethiopia in 2021, but there are still a few native or Typica varieties, and by 2022 and 2024, they will be digital varieties.

Although Ethiopia has 10000 to 15000 coffee varieties, most of which have not yet been formally identified, it is difficult to distinguish, so it is generally referred to as the "Heirloom" native species. However, with the continuous development of boutique coffee, the coffee market will be very interested in some rare or exclusive coffee varieties, so there are more and more local varieties in Ethiopia, such as JARC varieties, which are now common digital varieties.

The JARC variety was developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) in Ethiopia. From 1973 to 1975, the research center identified and planted 639 different coffee varieties through the collection of coffee beans from 15 regions. Among these samples, a total of 13 beans performed well, with the characteristics of disease resistance, high yield, drought tolerance and good flavor.

Therefore, JARC classifies these beans as "1974/1975CBD-Rexistent Selections". That is, the numbering series, and the common ones are 74110 and 74158. The first two digits, 74x75, refer to the year in which they were found, while the number after 74ap75 is the variety number.

In addition, in this Ethiopian COE competition, most of the award-winning coffee comes from the Sidamo producing area, while the Sidamoz producing areas Bensa and Bona are even more impressive. Bonavia is in the eastern part of Sidamo province, while recently the famous Bansha is located just east of Bona. Bona is affected by the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, resulting in high elevations, planting up to 2150-2330 meters above sea level, and tributaries between the Gunale River throughout the area, providing ample water, as well as fertile soil provided by the Holo volcano, so that these producing areas can achieve success in COE.
