Recently, the Daily Mail reported that a 13-year-old girl died suddenly after drinking hot chocolate provided by a local Costa coffee shop.
Reports said that on the day of the accident, the girl's mother was going to take her to the dentist. When she passed by a Coast coffee shop, she ordered a cup of hot chocolate for her. When placing an order, she specifically told the barista that her daughter was seriously allergic to dairy products, emphasizing that only soy milk can be added to drinks.
However, during the waiting period at the dental clinic, the girl took a sip of the drink and realized that it was not the soy milk they had requested, but milk that would cause her allergic reaction. She immediately informed her mother, and the two went to a nearby pharmacy for help.
Pharmacy staff learned about the girl's condition and provided her with an EpiPen-a treatment that can be injected to fight life-threatening allergic reactions. An ambulance and ambulance personnel also arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and took the girl to the hospital. But it was too late, and the girl was finally confirmed dead at 1 p.m. that day after multiple rescues.
It is reported that when allergic reactions are severe, there is a chance that patients will develop symptoms such as difficulty breathing, and even cause death. Data from Allergy UK shows that about 10 people die each year from allergic reactions in England and Wales, with 2% to 3% of children allergic to cow's milk, making cow's milk the most common food allergen in children.
The girl who unfortunately died was a patient with severe dairy intolerance. Her family said that when the girl was very young, she had already developed allergic reactions to dairy products, eggs, fish and wheat, so the family would avoid these foods that might cause her allergic reactions in life.
Unexpectedly, even though the barista was told not to use dairy products to make drinks for him, an unexpected accident occurred. A single sip of milk caused the girl to lose her precious life in a short period of time due to a severe allergic reaction.
Previously, in order to protect allergic patients, the British government introduced strict legal regulations in 2021, which included that companies handling food should provide allergen training to employees, with a focus on understanding risks, cross-contamination prevention, accurate labeling and responding to customers 'questions about allergens. The British Food Standards Agency said food companies could face financial penalties if they failed to comply.
Currently, the East London Coroner's Court will begin an investigation into the girl's death next Monday. The trial is expected to last a week and will explore the circumstances surrounding the death through testimony from 11 witnesses and experts.
