Starbucks has accepted bitcoin as a payment method in El Salvador, offering local consumers a new payment option, Bitcoin Magazine reported recently.
Since its official birth in 2009, Bitcoin has attracted wide attention from all over the world. Different from the traditional currency, Bitcoin is a P2P form of digital currency, which is not issued by specific monetary institutions, but generated through a large number of calculations according to specific algorithms. The new currency, which is beyond the scope of public understanding, was initially seen by many as tokens similar to game tokens, while others thought it was a hoax.
However, as the global discussion of Bitcoin becomes more and more heated, the market value of Bitcoin continues to rise. In the United States, a bitcoin can be exchanged for thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars, which, in the eyes of most bitcoin players, can be exchanged for cash as well as for the daily consumption of ordinary people, so in recent years, there has been a never-ending discussion about whether Bitcoin can become a mainstream currency for daily payment.
Countries around the world have different views on the bitcoin as a digital currency. Some countries, such as Thailand and Pakistan, believe that the use of Bitcoin may pose a threat to their financial system and economy, and explicitly prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies. Some countries, such as the United States and Japan, believe that Bitcoin is a legal way of payment, allowing it to circulate and trade at home, and players can use their own bitcoin for shopping.
Among the countries that support bitcoin, El Salvador is a special case. It is understood that El Salvador is the first country in the world to use Bitcoin as its national legal tender. At present, it is vigorously promoting and popularizing Bitcoin at home, and more and more countries are also using Bitcoin as a means of payment in this small Central American country.
Before that, Starbucks had partnered with Bakkt, a bitcoin futures platform, to convert bitcoin into dollars before buying coffee, which seemed to some to be the same as allowing bitcoin to pay, but Starbucks did not plan to accept bitcoin as a payment method directly in the store, saying it could not be paid in bitcoin.
However, in the video released by Bitcoin Magazine, Sawaldo consumers have been able to buy Starbucks products directly with bitcoin. This move should be an improvement made by Starbucks to meet the needs of local consumers. At the same time, it will also attract consumers interested in cryptocurrency and enhance the overall customer experience through the convenience of digital payment.
For consumers, it is undoubtedly a popular decision for Starbucks to formally accept Bitcoin as a method of direct payment. Many Salvadorans, who already have some knowledge and experience of cryptocurrency, are excited about this new payment method, and in their view, using bitcoin not only facilitates their shopping, but also avoids some of the problems in traditional payment methods.
Starbucks' move not only caused a sensation in El Salvador, but also had a far-reaching impact around the world. It reflects the growing popularity and acceptance of cryptocurrencies around the world. As more and more enterprises and businesses begin to accept digital currency as a way of payment, the field of payment will become more diversified and digital in the future.
