Recently, Colombia held the ninth LAND OF DIVERSITY,LOD competition and auction in the land of abundance. Within three months, the competition received coffee from 1018 growers from 13 coffee producing regions in Colombia. after two rounds of screening, 30 coffees were selected by the international judges and the top five LOD prizes were selected at the same time.

A total of 546 auctions were held online and offline in the LOD auction. Wang Coffee was the washed rose of Annona Manor in Buesaco, Nalinglong province, and the auction price reached 66.50 US dollars per pound. The average price of the auction reached US $20.06 / lb, with a total price of US $375637.01.

You may be wondering, what is this Colombian LOD competition? In fact, this LOD competition, similar to the Cup Of Excellence Cup (COE) and the Best Panama (Best Of Panama, BOP), is a national coffee quality competition in Colombia.

However, the history of this competition is not as long as that of BOP. So far, only 9 LOD competitions have been held. As early as 2005, Colombia began to hold the COE competition, until in 2016, the Colombian Council of Coffee growers (FNC) decided to jump out of the COE selection system and start an independent national coffee quality competition, which is Colombia's Land of Diversity (LOD).

According to reports, the competition has now become part of the FNC strategic plan, which aims to improve the quality, differentiation and added value of Colombian coffee in the entire coffee value chain, spread the diversity and diversity of Colombian coffee flavors, attract domestic and foreign attention to Colombian boutique coffee, and ultimately increase the income of Colombian coffee farmers.

In Colombia, coffee is mainly grown in the Andes in the central and western part of Colombia. The Andes are mainly divided into eastern, central and western Cordillera Mountains, with an average elevation of more than 3000 meters. There are also a number of volcanoes, which, along with high elevations and geographical environment, make the whole mountain range have a variety of microclimates, which run through many coffee producing areas in Colombia and are basically harvested throughout the year. Different kinds of coffee mature at different times.

Therefore, according to the two seasons of Colombian coffee production, LOD will hold one in March-April in the first half of the year, mainly evaluating coffee beans harvested in September-December of the previous year, while the next will be held in September-October next year, focusing on coffee beans harvested in May-August. Generally speaking, one is mainly responsible for the central and northern coffee producing areas, and the other is mainly responsible for the central and southern coffee producing areas, so the two competitions will cover all Colombian coffee and its flavor characteristics.

At the same time, this is also the purpose of FNC's creation of LOD, because FNC believes that the COE competition is only held once a year, during which some coffee producing areas in Colombia are still in the harvest period, unable to participate in COE, so a lot of opportunities are missed. Recently, FNC also announced that it will postpone the 2024 COE competition to the first half of 2025, and this time there will be a lot of coffee produced in coffee producing areas that have not had the opportunity before, which will also raise the profile of these producing areas and show the diversity of coffee producing areas in Colombia.

In addition, LOD is special in that its award is not a single set of champion beans, the competition also has small and large batches. This is because a large number of coffee plantations were abandoned as a result of the war in Colombia, and later, in order to save the coffee industry, they began to integrate wasteland and divide it into small plots and sell them to farmers at very low prices. Colombia is still dominated by small farmers.

The large batch set up in the competition is mainly coffee beans produced by some large estates, which will select the best BEST ESTATE and receive a prize of 25 million pesos. The small batches are mainly coffee beans produced by some small farms or farmers, and can be divided into five awards: best acidity (BEST ACIDITY), best alcohol thickness (BEST BODY), best softness (BEST SOFTNESS), best balance (BEST BALANCE) and best special flavor (BEST EXOTIC). These awards are selected by both domestic and international judges, and the final raw beans are selected and auctioned.

After that, FNC also announced that the 10th Annual LOD Competition will be held in northern Colombia in March 2025, when there will be some high-quality coffee produced in northern regions such as Santander and Antioquia.
