At present, Colombia has become the third largest coffee producer in the world because of its unique topography and climate. Among them, the country has 15 coffee producing areas, which are mainly concentrated in the western Andes, which have their own characteristics due to different planting areas and treatment methods.

Among these producing areas, boutique coffee producing areas are mainly concentrated in the southwest, such as hui orchid (Huila), Cauca and Narino. In recent years, coffee beans from Huilan producing area can often be seen in the market. What are the characteristics and special features of this producing area? Why is it so popular?

First of all, Colombia is located at the equator, the climate varies according to the topography, and there are many mountains. Thanks to the diverse climate provided by the mountains, Colombia is the harvest season all year round, and coffee from different producing areas ripens at different times.

However, this is also sub-regional. in the northern and southern producing areas, there is only one rainy season and dry season and only one harvest season throughout the year, but there are two dry and rainy seasons in the central producing area in a year, so there are two harvest seasons and the yield is very high. In the past, when there was no concept of boutique coffee, farmers paid more attention to coffee production in order to get more benefits. At that time, coffee producing areas such as Jindio Quindio, Cauca Valley Cauca Valley and Cundinamaka Cundinamarca in central China became the early Colombian coffee triangle axis.

At that time, Huilan producing area has been dominated by agriculture, mainly growing grain, fruit, tobacco and sugar cane. When coffee cultivation spread to the region, farmers also began to grow coffee, due to low yield, has been unknown. Until the concept of boutique coffee slowly emerged, some international coffee buyers came to Huilan area to find that the coffee in this area was better than that in the central and northern regions, and the output was not low, so they flocked to buy coffee here.

Since then, the price of coffee in Huilan has risen all the way, even exceeding the price of coffee in the north, the income of farmers has begun to increase, and more and more local people have begun to grow coffee. The government also began to focus on the development of the southern producing areas, which later formed the Columbia New Coffee Triangle with Cauca and Nalinglong, both in the south, and often appeared on the Columbia COE Cup list.

Huilan, also known as Huila, is located in the valley between the eastern and central mountains, named after the nearby Huilan volcano of the same name, which is also the tallest volcano in Colombia, up to 5365 meters above sea level, but at the same time provides the region with mineral-rich volcanic soil.

Moreover, the area is located in the canyon, surrounded by mountains, will not be affected by cold winds in the canyon, but also has a cool mountain breeze, which makes the climate mild, with year-round temperatures between 17 and 23 °C. It is also the birthplace of the Magdalena River, the mother river of Colombia, which is rich in water resources, and coffee is grown on hillsides above 1500 meters above sea level. With such a rich natural environment, the coffee produced here is of good quality and stable.

When it comes to the Huilan producing area, it is inseparable from the southwestern town of Pitalito, which is the most important coffee production center in the province, where the average coffee farm is only 2 hectares, but has many well-known coffee farms, such as the dividing line estate El Diviso and the oak estate El Rorble.

According to the National Federation of Colombian Coffee growers (FNC), the Huilan region was officially named of origin in 2013 and now accounts for about 18% of Colombia's total coffee production. The coffee in Huilan area is so popular because of its high output and good quality. At the same time, it has won many awards in coffee competitions. With its full taste, nuts, chocolate, caramel and other flavors and pleasant fruit acids are loved by consumers.
