Who are the three coffee giants in Ethiopia? What is the difference between Rose Summer, Yejia Xuefei and Flower Kui?
Ethiopia is not only the birthplace of Arabica, but also a huge treasure trove of natural genes. Ethiopia breeds countless delicious coffee, and because of its affordable price, it has become the preferred coffee producing area for most coffee people. Among the coffee in Ethiopia, there are three kinds of coffee that are called "the coffee giants of Ethiopia" because of their high popularity. They are: Gesha, Yega Xuefei, and Sakuran.
Even beginners will be familiar with the identity of these three giants by word of mouth of many "old masters". But if you want to talk about the characteristics of each of the three, and what are the differences between them, it may be difficult to tell one or two, because most friends have not yet in-depth understanding. So today, Qianjie will come to share with you: Yega, Rose Xia and Sakuran, what are the characteristics of the "Essex Coffee Big three"?
If Yega Xuefei wants to ask what is the most typical coffee in Ethiopia, there must be Yega Xuefei in the answer. Yega Xuefei is not the name of a coffee variety, but the name of a region where coffee is produced. Before the concept of boutique coffee became popular, coffee was always named after the place where the coffee was produced. So the coffee beans from Yega Sheffield can be called Yega Sheffield Coffee.

From the map, we can see that the Yegashafi producing area is located on the eastern edge of the East African Rift Valley, which is cool and foggy all the year round, with an average elevation of 1700-2100 meters, making it one of the highest coffee-producing areas in Ethiopia. Before 1995, Yega Xuefei referred only to a small town located in the Sidamo district. However, Yega's excellent geographical environment and unique planting system provide excellent growing conditions for coffee beans, which enable coffee beans grown in Yega to absorb more nutrients and produce better flavor in the growth process. Gradually, it was discovered that Yega's coffee flavor was different from that of other Sidamo coffee, so after the abolition of the province to federalism and several adjustments to the coffee classification table of the EXC (Ethiopian Commodity Exchange), Yega Xuefei was able to become independent from the Sidamo region. The flavor that distinguishes Yega from other producing areas is also known as Yega Sheffield.
"fragrant jasmine, fresh lemon acid, clean green tea tail rhyme" is what people call "Yejia Xuefei". If you want to feel this delicacy, then the washed beans from Yejasuefe are definitely the best choice. Part of the reason for Yega Chuefei's fame is that it is washed one step earlier than other producing areas, which does not allow the beans to ferment too much, and the flavor of the beans can be interpreted. The coffee as a whole will have a cleaner performance. For example, Guoding Ding Ding, which is often shared in Qianjie, is the representative selected by Qianjie to emphasize the flavor of Yega Xuefei.
Let's stop here about the story of Yejia Xuefei, and then we will open a new one in Qianjie to share with you. The next thing that Qianjie wants to share is the coffee that has been popular since 2004-Rose Summer.
Gesha (Rose Summer) about Rose Summer, Qianjie is no stranger to everyone. "Rose Summer" is the name of the coffee breed. Since 2004, when the Emerald Manor used it to shine on BOP, Rosa has become the "new overlord" of the coffee industry. "rich citrus acid, elegant white flower aroma, and complex and changeable fruit aroma" is the shock brought by the fragrance at the beginning of Rose Summer, and this has become what people call "Rose Summer flavor". But despite the boundless scenery of Rosa, the road before Rosa became famous was not easy.
Although Rosa was famous in Panama in 2004, it was discovered more than 70 years ago. After comparing the samples, people can trace back to the fact that Rosa actually originated in Ethiopia. In the 1930s, because leaf rust caused serious damage to the coffee industry, people need to find disease-resistant coffee varieties to breed improved varieties to combat the erosion of disasters. Ethiopia, as a natural treasure trove of genes, is naturally the best place to find treasure, so the British went to Ethiopia to collect coffee varieties in an attempt to find coffee varieties with disease-resistant genes.
At that time, the team came to the Rosa area southwest of Kafa Forest to collect coffee varieties and named the beans after the local name. The beans then traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and other places for research, and were later cataloged by Costa Rican CATIE as an antifungal variety. "Geisha T2722" is the serial number of the rose summer species that eventually reached Panama and carried forward.
So we can know that, in a broad sense, the rose summer refers to the "Geisha T2722" from Panama, which is slender, oval-shaped, pointed at both ends and full at the center. And listed as the Rose Summer "Gesha" among the three Ethiopian coffee giants, it does not mean it! As we can see from the above, the name of the rose summer variety is named after the area of the local rose summer in Ethiopia, where it is collected. In other words, coffee beans in that area can be named in such a way that they can be called "Rose Summer". So later, during the fire of the Rose Summer Wave, there were many "Rose Summer" species in Ethiopia. They are not T2722, but native species of the Rosa Mountain, but they are all named Rosa in the same way. Among them, the most famous are the Gori Rose Summer and Rose Xia 1931 of the Rose Summer Village Manor.

After 2004, many people who were shocked by the Panamanian rose summer set off to the Kafa forest, the birthplace of the rose summer, in an attempt to find the same rose summer variety locally. Among them is the present-day Rose Summer Manor owner Adam. Adam, accompanied by Willem Boot, the owner of the mule farm, went to the place where the rose summer was found to select seeds. Due to the lack of genetic comparison technology at that time, similar beans can only be found by referring to the plants of Panamanian rose, the shape and flavor of beans. Finally found out Gory Rose Summer, and Rose Xia 1931. At present, the Red Standard Rose Summer Village in Qianjie Street uses the Gori Rose summer variety, and its appearance is somewhat different from that of Panama Rose Summer. On the other hand, the flavor of it cooked in the sun is more of the native flavor of Ethiopia itself, with a bright and full sense of juice, with flavors of citrus, pineapple and mango.
The bean seed used in the golden standard of Rose Xia Village is Rose Xia 1931! Compared with the Red Standard of Rose Summer Village, its appearance and flavor will be more similar to that of Panamanian Rose Summer: elegant chamomile flowers, sweet and sour berries, citrus, melon, and tail rhyme will have a more obvious sense of tea.
The last of the three giants is Sakuran! If you want to talk about the popularity of Essex beans, then Sakuran's reputation may be higher than the first two. Because Sakuran launched the "version number" (that is, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0.), everyone is looking forward to what kind of surprise the new version of Sakuran will bring to everyone every year. Last year's Sakuran has come to version 8.0, which means that Sakuran has been known to the world for eight years.
Sakuran is neither the variety name of coffee beans nor the name of a producing area in Ethiopia, it is a trade name. In early 2017, a sun-dried coffee bean from Humbera won the COE championship. Then the bean was introduced by domestic raw bean merchants, and then the raw bean merchants combined with the Chinese context to give it the name "Sakuran", meaning "hundred flowers." The variety of Huakui coffee beans is native to Humbera, but because the name collided with the Taiwanese translation of geisha as "geisha" (geisha is a Japanese profession, and Sakuran is the top of the geisha), many people have the misunderstanding that "Sakui is Rose Summer". But in fact, the two are very different concepts. The earliest Sakuran stunned everyone with its rich creamy aroma of strawberries, while the latest version of Sakuri 8.0 still retains this feature. in addition to the aroma of strawberries and cream, Sakui 8.0 also exudes high sweet flavors such as guava, citrus and melon, not only that, but also with obvious roses, sweet and fragrant.
What is the difference between the three Ethiopian giants? To sum up, we can know that the characteristics and differences of the "Big three" are very obvious. From the belonging of the producing area, the meaning represented by the name, and then to their respective flavor characteristics, are completely different. In the end, the question of Qianjie came up: which one do you like best in front of the screen among the Big three?
