Brazilian coffee yellow bourbon brewed flavor characteristics and origin share! What grade is red bourbon coffee?
Recently, many customers and friends who buy beans at Qianjie offline stores have very clear goals. They either ask for yellow bourbon or red bourbon by name, or they ask for both. The quantity is very large, and it can be said that they are completely in line with the Bourbon family.
Their purpose is also very simple, which is to compare the differences between different colors of bourbon and their characteristics. However, because the origin, processing, and baking of the varieties are different, this comparison is actually not very intuitive. So today Qianjie plans to share the origins and respective characteristics of these two popular varieties. When everyone becomes familiar with them and then taste them, you will surely be able to capture more unexpected flavors.
Bourbon bourbon is transliterated from "Bourbon". It is a variety produced by the Typeca mutation and is also one of the oldest existing coffee varieties. Therefore, it is also a branch of Arabica. It's not just the age. Bourbon, like iron pickup, is the "parent" of many of today's popular Arabica coffee varieties. Common varieties such as SL28 and Kadura are descendants or mutations of Bourbon.
The birth of Bourbon dates back to the early 18th century, when Europe already had a fanatical demand for coffee. However, because the coffee trade at that time was monopolized by Yemen and the price of coffee was very expensive, the French started producing their own ideas. Simply put, I plan to grow it myself! But as Qian Jie said, coffee was completely monopolized by Yemen at that time, and all the coffee beans exported were cooked beans that could not be grown after being boiled or roasted. If you want to get coffee that you can grow, there is only one way! What solution? That's right! It is to steal and "borrow" some coffee from Yemen to grow it. So since 1708, the French have successfully stolen coffee seedlings from Yemen three times! In addition to those stolen in 1708 that were not successfully cultivated because they had no relevant experience, the saplings stolen in 1715 and 1718 were successfully cultivated because they had relevant planting experience and techniques. These saplings were planted on the island of Bourbon (now known as Reunion Island), 680 kilometers east of Madagascar, and then they mutated on it and grew into smaller, more rounded varieties different from the iron pickup. As a result, these varieties, which were grown on the island of Bourbon and mutated, were named Bourbon.
After the 19th century, bourbon coffee was spread around the world by French missionaries. From Africa to South America, bourbon coffee took root under the microclimate and soil of various countries and began to reproduce. Through mutation or hybridization, new varieties were produced, and in this way, the bourbon coffee community gradually grew. Bourbon is characterized by its excellent flavor and a slightly higher yield than iron pickup trucks. Because of this, although it has little resistance to leaf rust like iron pickup trucks and has high requirements on the planting environment, it can still replace iron pickup trucks in many countries and become the main local planting variety.
There is a red bourbon in the Qianjie bean list. It comes from Rwanda, Africa. It is a washed medium and light roasted coffee bean. Because washing will not cause too deep fermentation, the beans show more of the flavor of the variety and local terroir.

Interestingly, at first, bourbon was only called bourbon. It was only after the appearance of yellow bourbon that bourbon gained an alternative name for red bourbon in order to distinguish it from it. The birthplace of yellow bourbon is today's bourbon coffee grower giant and Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer.
The first batch of yellow bourbon took root in Brazil was in 1860. In just ten years, red bourbon has become one of the main cultivated varieties in Brazil. It is precisely because of the popularity of bourbon coffee in Brazil that this led to the emergence of yellow bourbon.
In 1930, a coffee variety with yellow fruits appeared in a bourbon plantation near Pedneras in northeastern Sao Paulo state, Brazil. Since the discovery site was a bourbon plantation, and then the yellow botucato (yellow iron pickup truck), which grows yellow coffee fruits in Brazil, local people thought that this was a hybrid of bourbon and yellow botucato, and then simply named it-"Yellow Bourbon."
For a more detailed story about Yellow Bourbon, you can move to the article "Yellow Bourbon". Because it is a long story, Qianjie will not repeat it too much here. Although yellow bourbon is a unique bourbon variety in Brazil, it has not been widely cultivated locally like red bourbon since its discovery. Why? Because it is not so easy to grow, and the yield is not so considerable.
Yellow Bourbon perfectly inherits the characteristics of iron pickup trucks that are not easy to grow. It is not resistant to wind and rain, has weak resistance to leaf rust, and the yield is relatively low. As Qianjie has always shared, for farmers, the benefits from production will be more objective, so yellow bourbon is not widely grown locally. Although it has low yields and is difficult to grow, when we plant it at high altitudes, yellow bourbon will have a very excellent sweetness and flavor performance. Because of this, some Brazilian estates that pursue flavor grow yellow bourbon to produce high-quality coffee. For example, Qianjie Brazil Queen Estate in Qianjie Bean List is a yellow bourbon variety.
Front Street Coffee: Brazil·Queen's Estate Yellow Bourbon Country: Brazilian production area: Moggiana Altitude: 1400~1950 meters Variety: Yellow Bourbon treatment: Semi-sun flavor: chocolate, nuts, caramel, a little berries, slightly fermented aroma
The Yellow Bourbon of the Front Street Queen's Brazilian Estate in the Front Street bean list is characterized by a very obvious sweetness, because Front Street uses a medium to deep baking to stimulate its nut aroma and enhance the mellow, so the flavor is more based on the aroma of medium and deep baking such as chocolate, nuts, and caramel. Then, because the baking is not so deep, you can taste a little bit of berries at the end, and may even have a little fermentation aroma. The level can be said to be rich!
