Are there still few cafes in Xiamen?

Last Updated: 2024/11/09, Opening a cafe in small groups has now become a beautiful vision for many post-80s and post-90s generation.

According to data from the Xiamen Bakery and Coffee Association, seven new coffee shops were added last year, while six withdrew from the market. These figures do not include coffee shops that are not registered. Su Bailing, executive deputy secretary general of Xiamen Baking and Coffee Association, said that the data show that Xiamen coffee shops are now saturated and it is shameful and difficult to "squeeze" into the city.

According to the statistics of Xiamen Baking and Coffee Association in 2012, there are more than 2300 registered coffee shops in Xiamen. On both sides of the Lvcuo bus stop alone, there are four coffee shops within 100 meters.

Angel, a coffee master at an internationally renowned coffee shop, said: "Coffee shops are now highly competitive in Xiamen. With the entry of many internationally famous coffee shops, many small shops have closed down one after another. It is very difficult to survive without popularity." The geographical location and product quality of the shop are the key to supporting the operation of the coffee shop. Although coffee shops seem to be profitable, with a cup of coffee costing only 1 to 2 yuan, most coffee shops lose money in the first year and operate well before they can make money in the second year.

Su Bailing said that in Xiamen, most coffee shops operate attentive coffee, such as the well-known latte, cappuccino, macchiato and so on. The business model of the coffee shop is also more complex, that is, the coffee + meal model. But there are very few really professional and good cafes. "at present, with the saturation of the coffee industry in Xiamen, coffee shops are facing the situation of opening more and falling fast, and many small and medium-sized coffee shops are struggling to operate." This is because the threshold for opening a coffee shop is not high. Three or five young people who love coffee can open a coffee shop after one or two months of training and a set of equipment ranging from 50,000 yuan to 60,000 yuan. Due to the lack of technical expertise and the lack of distinctive mode of operation, some small coffee shops were quickly eliminated. On the other hand, in well-known coffee shops like Starbucks, consumers are very loyal, and some customers come to Starbucks for coffee four or five times a month. In Su Boling's view, technology plus marketing is the magic weapon for small and medium-sized coffee shops to compete with international well-known coffee shops. A professional barista needs to be trained for about a year before a good barista can brew the "true" taste of coffee. At the same time, coffee shops must be creative. To sell coffee is not only to sell products, but also to sell creativity. Only coffee shops with personality and distinct theme will retain customers.
