Brazilian coffee production will be reduced by more than 9% in 2014
The latest forecast released by Brazil's National Supply Company shows that Brazil's coffee production will reach 44.57 million bags (60 kg per bag) this year, 9.33% less than the production in 2013.
Among them, Arabica coffee production was 32.24 million bags, accounting for 72.4% of the total production, a decrease of 15.81% compared with last year; the remaining 12.33 million bags belong to Robusta coffee (also known as strong coffee), and the output will increase by 13.49% compared with last year.
The forecast breaks Brazil's relatively stable production cycle since 2005. The year 2013 was the small year of the coffee production cycle, with an annual output of 49.15 million bags, a decrease of 3.3 per cent over the previous year. This year is a big year in the production cycle, and output should have increased significantly over last year.
This year's decline is mainly due to severe drought in the main producing areas, forcing producers to reduce their acreage and expand production of the drought-resistant Robusta coffee, which is less marketable. Brazil's total coffee cultivation area this year is 2.27 million hectares, down 1.9% from last year.
The Brazilian coffee harvest season begins at the end of March and continues until October. Brazil is the world's leading coffee exporter, accounting for one-third of international sales, with major export markets such as Germany, the United States and Italy.
