The annual World Barista Competition WBC is the stage for many new inventions to showcase their elegant demeanour. For example, siphon Italian espresso machine, vacuum low-temperature rose summer coffee beans, carbon-soaked coffee beans and other new things emerge in endlessly. But at this year's WBC competition, a new invention attracted the attention of the whole audience. This invention has a strange appearance and is all green. If the British barista champion Maxwell Corona Dashwood (Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood) had not shown how to use it, no one would have guessed that this gadget without a handle would be a coffee hammer! Maxwell has reached the WBC finals three times. It is understood that the origin of this pink hammer is not simple. Its designer is Pete Sassen (Pete Southern) from Clockwork Espresso. This pink hammer, called "PUSH", is an adjustable coffee hammer shaped like a hockey puck. Sassen says the powder hammer ensures the consistent quality of pressed powder every time a barista presses powder.

Peter Sassen's invention received a lot of attention before it was approved by the American boutique coffee association SCAA. Sassen looks very low-key. He had some pink hammer samples in his hand and some business cards in his pocket. I was lucky enough to meet Sassen outside the competition venue. I took this opportunity to give him a brief interview. The following is the interview:

Me: how do we use your PUSH powder hammer?

Sassen: the inside of the pink hammer is engraved with a scale. You can adjust the height of the pressed powder by adjusting the scale. Once adjusted, the scale can be locked. Put the powder hammer on the filter bowl and you will find that every time you press the powder, the height of the pressed powder is the same. As long as the amount of powder you put remains the same, the quality of pressed powder will not change.

Me: tell me about yourself. When did you think of designing such a pink hammer?

Sassen: I have my own main business. My company makes DNA analyzers. I also studied engineering and design myself. We have an Italian espresso machine in our office. Every time my colleagues make coffee, they find it difficult to press the powder. You have to practice backwards to press better. But unless you have several hours of free time to train your coffee-making skills, you will never make the perfect coffee. So my colleagues are always complaining that their coffee is not good, but they all think I do better. They don't understand why the coffee they make is so different from mine.

Although I am not a professional barista, I know how to press powder. It is difficult for my colleagues to keep the quality of pressed powder consistent when pressing powder, so I wanted to design a pink hammer to help them control the quality of pressed powder. My colleagues don't want to switch to professional baristas. They just want better coffee. This is the origin of this pink hammer.

Me: I want to know why Maxwell Corona Dashwood used your pink hammer in the game? This is unbelievable! Your pink hammer became famous.

Sasson: I found Maxwell first. He wasn't interested at first because there were so many people recommending inventions to him every day that he hadn't seen anything that interested him. That's what I said to him: "Hi!" Would you like to see my new pink hammer? " He replied, "No, I'm sorry, I'm really busy." But I didn't give up and called him with Skype. I showed him my pink hammer by video. At that time, he said to me, "so it is!" This looks good. " So the next day I mailed my pink hammer to him. When he received it, he gave me some suggestions for revision, so I spent the whole weekend working on a brand new pink hammer. I didn't send him the finished product until he was completely satisfied. He told me he was going to take part in the competition with my pink hammer, so I bought a plane ticket here.

I think this is a great opportunity to let the world know about this product. I'm not a good barista, and I'm not going to be a professional barista. What I want is a champion barista to say to me, "Yes, it works!" and test it in a high-pressure environment. Maxwell gave me the perfect answer.

Me: what research did you do before you designed this product?

Sasson: we use the VST filter bowl in the office, so my pink hammer is only suitable for this kind of filter bowl at the moment. In the future, I will design powder hammers suitable for other sizes of filter bowls. But to be honest, we only wanted to solve the problem at hand, so we focused on its functionality. I want to design a powder hammer that is more convenient to use and can make the quality of coffee more constant. I remember reading an article on your Sprudge website. The theme of that article is the effect of powder on health. The article was so interesting that I read the whole article from beginning to end and discussed the design concept of this pink hammer with one of its authors. They also said they wanted to do the same research with my pink hammer. That's why my pink hammer doesn't have a handle.

Working in a coffee shop, you need to press powder hundreds of times a day, which will increase the burden on your shoulder and back muscles and bones. Over time, there will be something wrong with your shoulder and back. But using the PUSH powder hammer to press the powder does not have this problem, because you put the whole body weight on the powder hammer, and then push the powder hammer. Of course, if I want to produce powder hammers in large quantities, I must do more research and experiments. But I believe this pink hammer can help baristas lighten the burden on their bodies.

Me: do you think this pink hammer will be popular in all boutique coffee shops in the future?

Sasson: to be honest, I don't think any barista would turn it down. You can't reach the height of the PUSH powder hammer with any other kind of powder hammer, because this powder hammer can ensure the consistent quality of each pressed powder. I think even Maxwell was worried about pink hammers.

Me: so how can people get this pink hammer?

Sassen: this product is not on the market yet, but you can log on to my website and become a member. Once the product is pre-sold, I will let you know. In the next few weeks, we will build a global sales network. We have got many orders from many companies, including some world-famous large enterprises.

Me: what do you think of the future of your Clockwork Espresso company? Do you have any other design ideas or ideas at present?

Sasson: of course, but they are still secret. Please look forward to it.
