CNN recently named eight coffee cities, including London, Melbourne, Reykjavik, Rome, Singapore, Seattle, Vienna and Wellington. (CNN-8 of the world's great coffee cities)

Singapore, the only Asian city on the list, was originally famous for its local Nanyang coffee, but in recent years, starting from about 2011, Western-style coffee shops in Singapore have been opened one after another, from the initial dozens to the present. I feel that there are new shops popping up every few days, which also stops people from thinking about trying them one by one.

Over the past three years, I drink nothing more than a few, but there are also some because of fame, especially to try, here to make a general introduction and personal recommendation. More photos are sorted out in this album, which you can compare: photo album-Lion City Coffee

1. Nylon Coffee Roasters

Nylon, in our words, is very small and fresh. They mainly do coffee baking, the retail store is completely by the way, to meet their hobbies. The coffee beans chosen by the shopkeeper are all of their own taste, and they go out to buy coffee beans in coffee gardens such as Ethiopia and Colombia several times a year. Although Nylon2012 only opened this year, it now has a group of loyal fans and many coffee colleagues often come here to drink coffee.

There are no products other than coffee, and there are only simple coffee of the day, White and Long Black on the coffee list. White is divided into 3 ounces, 5 ounces and 7 ounces, which is equivalent to thick piccolo latte, ordinary latte and lighter latte respectively.

Although the geographical location of Nylon is not remote, it is not easy to find. In a small shop in a community, the smell of wine is not afraid of the depth of the alley, it is still bustling every weekend, and it is full of familiar faces. I went there several times, that is, the coffee cup came out and sat in the community garden outside and drank it slowly. However, Everton Park, where it is located, has gathered many coffee shops and cake shops, each with a little freshness (sweat). Nylon actually ranks second in Singapore coffee shop in my mind, but I think Nylon should be the most distinctive one. If you come to Singapore and want to experience the local western coffee culture, I think Nylon is the most worthwhile to try.

> personal recommendation: 5 ounces of White. Nylon I think the good thing is that their grandma Niu is delicately beaten, 5 ounces of lattes drink the most smoothly, 3 ounces are slightly strong, 7 ounces are too light.

2. Jewel Coffee

Jewel is my favorite, most visited and most connected family. The relationship is the most iron because I go more, I go more because I like it, and I like it because it tastes good.

Jewel Coffee was completed in June 2011 in the newer Asia Square area of Singapore's CBD district. The owner, Adrian, once worked in finance. Later, because of his interest in coffee, he went to Seattle to study coffee and came back to open the coffee shop. The storefront is quite simple, except for all kinds of coffee, there are only a few lunches such as breakfast, spaghetti and sandwiches. The price of western-style coffee is on the high side, which is about S $6 in Singapore, which is very different from the local Nanyang coffee in Singapore. Jewel has no special decoration and does not have too many seats, so those who choose to come here are all because they like the coffee here.

Jewel upstairs is the Citibank building, opposite the Singapore Stock Exchange, so his main customer base is office workers, and CBD is deserted on weekends, which is not the style of overcrowded hipster on weekends. If you simply like coffee, or want to feel the busy lunch time in Singapore's CBD district next weekday, you can come here and try it.

There are two kinds of coffee beans for everyone to choose from every day, and the common varieties come from Brazil, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Sumatra, Costa Rica and El Salvador. According to Adrian, through observation over the past few years, he concluded that Westerners prefer coffee with strong acidity and Ethiopian origin, while Southeast Asians prefer weak but strong ones such as Sumatra, and then Asians in the northern part of Japan, China and South Korea like slightly lighter ones, basically Brazilian and Guatemalan beans.

> personal recommendation: I only order hot lattes for ten thousand years. I like Guatemalan coffee beans best. If it's morning, I'm not afraid that I can't sleep at night. Just order Sumatra, followed by Brazil.

Jewel Coffee coffee is excellent and runs well, and Adrian later opened another bar-style restaurant, Jewel Cafe + Bar, not far from Little India, which is addictive but wants to lose weight. Those who are not afraid of fat can try the special hamburgers here, and those who are afraid of being fat can choose spaghetti. There are also brunch, desserts and so on. I like the apple crumbles here very much. I don't know why the coffee is worse than the first store.

Jewel recently started baking his own coffee beans. I was free before I left. Adrian invited me to their own tasting party. They tried 17 kinds of coffee for the first time and 8 for the second time. It was fun. Adrian said that he is confident that he will make the best coffee roasting in Singapore, and the first store will change the menu to enrich the dining options outside coffee.

By the way, there are several that are very close to Jewel. The neighbor of Jewel Caf é + Bar is Liberty Coffee. At first, I was a little famous. I said I would try it, but every time I went to Jewel Caf é + Bar,Liberty, the door was closed. Later, I asked Adrian that the owner of the Liberty family was a pilot, this was a sideline for fun, and he opened the door occasionally.

Not far away, there is a Japanese-style French coffee shop called "fake coffee 39". To put it simply, it means all kinds of knockoffs. Coffee is terrible and tastes bad. We must use our lives to get around these knockoffs.

artisan boulangerie Co.

Artisan boulangerie Co.

The Jewel Coffee in CBD, where Asia Square is located, opened several new stores in late 2013:

Sophie's, a French bakery, quickly opened several, coffee is particularly bad, after all, is to make bread, but baked products are also very chicken ribs, not recommended.

63 Celsius-Western-style bars and restaurants, probably because of the new opening, the service is amateur, and the coffee is not bad or excellent, which can be ignored.

Artisan boulangerie Co.-- abc for short, there are several branches in this restaurant, the bao is very good, and the coffee is all right. The decoration of the store is quite lovely, and the blue chandelier is very bright. I recommend all kinds of bread and coffee here.

3. Papa Palheta Family-Chye Seng Hua Hardware (Regenerative hair hardware), Loysel's Toy

Papa Palheta is actually a pioneer of Western-style coffee in Singapore. After opening its first store in 2009, it brought up the culture of Western-style coffee in Singapore. Unfortunately, the location of the first store was too far away, and then after the new flagship store Chye Seng Hua Hardware (Regenerative hair hardware) Cafe opened in 2012, the owner Leon shut down Papa Palheta and moved the baking equipment to the new store. In addition, Loysel's Toy is also a sister store run by Leon, which uses coffee beans baked by Papa Palheta, and they also supply coffee beans to Toby's Estate in Robertson Quay with similar taste.

Chye Seng Hua Hardware (regenerated hair hardware) and Loysel's Toy have their own characteristics, more masculine characteristics, decoration experience, regenerated hair more like a bar, in addition to a special coffee tasting room. It's just that the locations of both houses are a little deeper, the traffic is relatively inconvenient, and the weather in Singapore is hot during the day, so it's painful to find this side specially.

In addition to coffee, both restaurants also serve common Western-style brunch and desserts, but they are not distinctive. I go there less by myself, so I won't make a personal recommendation. Chye Seng Hua Hardware (regenerative hair hardware) itself is well worth trying.

The above-mentioned Toby's Estate, which supplies coffee beans by Papa Palheta, follows the style of an Australian coffee shop, which is more open but lack of intimacy, and the Robertson Quay is very inconvenient for me, so in the end I haven't been there, so I won't comment on it.

4. Oriole

Before Jewel appeared, I basically settled in Oriole. Oriole initially opened its flagship store Oriole Cafe + Bar in 313 Somerset, the busiest district of Orchard Road in downtown Singapore, and later opened a second simple coffee shop in Republic Plaza, near the Raffles Place subway station in central CBD. Oriole baked his own coffee, and the main barista is a regular in the barista contest. There are also many award-winning specialty coffee in the store, which was considered the top coffee shop in Singapore before 2012. Later, with the emergence of more coffee shops owned by young people in Singapore, Oriole is a bit rigid compared to the vitality of rising stars.

Later, Oriole also hoped to open up more distinctive storefronts, opening a new storefront in the old house called shop houses in Singapore in the old town near Chinatown. Besides coffee, tea and horlicks, the drinks here seem to be what we call malt milk. Friends who don't like coffee can drink this.

Oriole Coffee: http://oriolecoffee.businesscatalyst.com/

> personal recommendation: if you want to try something fresh, try Oriole's feature-chili chocolate mocha (chilli chocolate mocha). It can only be described as unique. Some of my local friends in Singapore like it, but this spicy coffee is really weird if you ask me.

5. 40 Hands family-40 Hands, Tiong Bahru Bakery, Kiasu Espresso, Common Man Coffee Roasters

40 Hands is also a famous coffee baking brand in Singapore, and many well-known coffee shops, such as Tiong Bahru Bakery, Kiasu Espresso and Common Man Coffee Roasters, have been working with 40 Hands for a long time to select their coffee beans. But 40 Hands is better known for its high price than several other coffee baking brands.

The Tiong Bahru district, where 40 Hands is located, is now the hispter symbol of Singapore. The old colonial buildings here more or less give the area a certain romantic color, with many distinctive storefronts. According to my friend in Singapore, it was the 40 Hands check-in that set off the hipster craze of China Baru, selling a cup of coffee worth 8 Singapore dollars (about 40RMB). Unexpectedly, the prices of various restaurants and small shops around here have gone up, and now the hipster tags here are beginning to be annoying.

The coffee in the 40 Hands family tastes good, but the prices are annoying and don't have much features, so I don't usually go to 40 Hands unless I have no other choice at the moment.

6. G ST

GÄ ST is from Denmark and just started in early 2014. The owner is a couple from Denmark. Small storefront opposite Amoy Hawker Centre, close to Tanjong Pagar MRT station, great location.

The decoration of GÃ ST is typical of Nordic style, clean and simple, very bright, giving people a good mood. The owner bakes his own bread, makes his own snacks, even makes his own truffles, and has no sugar @_@. The price is small and expensive, but the salads and sandwiches taste very fresh. I really like the food here compared to coffee. The breakfast museli is very scary, but I can finish it every time.

Because GIST prepares its own ingredients, the quantity available every day is limited. At first, it plans to close at 7:30 p.m. every day, but it often sells out soon after lunch and temporarily closes at 4:30 p.m. every day. If you want to eat breakfast Museli, you have to hurry up early. I have gone a few times after 9:00 and it has been sold out.

> personal recommendation: Museli; same-day salad

Actually, the food is good.

There are many small shops near Amoy Xiamen Street near G ST. Let's briefly sum up:

Sarnies is the most successful small restaurant in CBD district, because CBD district often has no office workers and no flow of people on weekends, and many stores choose to close on weekends. However, Sarnies is open seven days a week, and there is a regular flow of passengers at night. The coffee here is also delicious. If you are a local, I think you can come to Sarnies once in a while. If you are a tourist visiting Singapore, you can skip Sarnies.

SPR Market

Looking at the big glass window on the outside, it is quite attractive. A complete small fresh shop, but the food and drinks are slightly mediocre and are not recommended.

Matt's Chocolate

It specializes in making a dark chocolate cake, which tastes good and is not too sweet. I haven't tried the coffee. To be honest, it probably won't taste good.

Truffs

Colleagues have been there several times, I am too lazy to go, but also a more chicken rib shop, I am very evil guess that it will not be open for long.

6 Oz Coffee

It tastes really bad.

Huggs

Personally, I don't drink Huggs, but I have to say that it has been very successful and found its own position. at the same time, there are local Nanyang coffee and Western-style coffee, the price range is more friendly, and several branches are very popular.

But I still don't recommend it.

7. Maison Ikkoku: http://www.maison-ikkoku.net/

Maison Ikkoku, a coffee shop from Japan, is near Arabian Street with unique scenery. There used to be three floors, the first floor is a coffee shop, the second floor is a Japanese clothing store, and the third floor is a bar. It is estimated that this kind of thing can work well in Japan, but in Singapore. The clothing store is closed. However, Maison coffee, dishes and pastries are excellent, except that the position is a little bit exhausting, there are no big shortcomings. However, if you go to eat brunch on weekends, you will have to wait for 40 minutes to 1 hour.

8. The Plain & RONIN

The Plain and RONIN are from the same shopkeeper. The shopkeeper, who probably studied in Australia, especially praised the Australian coffee shop, where there is no menu, relying on the clerk to recite the menu for guests to order, and it is the same when they are asked to restate the dishes ordered by themselves. in concept, it is to build a kind of trust, which is inevitably a bit messy in execution, and sometimes the service is a little slow. Singapore's coffee culture has been booming in the past two years, and the two stores, especially the newly opened RONIN, are absolutely overcrowded on weekends.

The Plain is brighter, while RONIN is darker, and the lights are too dim for reading.

I vaguely feel that this shopkeeper is a little self-righteous, and many designers are more self-centered. The newly opened RONIN does not have a website or a store license. I guess I want to highlight my style entirely by word of mouth, but some services have not been able to proceed from the point of view of the guests.

9. Strangers' Reunion

The owner of Strangers' Reunion is said to have won the World Barista Competition. I went to this store under the name. In terms of location, Strangers' Reunion is near the subway station Outram Park, between Baru in the gathering place of CBD and hipster, but the traffic in the area is not particularly convenient, and many stores around are closed.

The reason for the location is that I have only been there once, and the coffee is not amazing, but feels a little strange. At that time, I ate brunch with friends without ordering the most famous waffles in the store. The general impression was very common.

10. Dutch Colony Coffee Co. @ PasarBella

The Dutch Colony in PasarBella is mentioned in CNN's article. Personally, I have only been to Dutch Colony once. The quality of the coffee here is good. The coffee beans are baked in the shop.

The real attraction of Dutch Colony, and its fatal flaw, is its location, PasarBella. Pasar Bella is a newly opened farmers' market in Singapore, located in the western Bukit Timah area, which is quite remote. There is no way to get there by public transport at all. It can only be reached by car, taxi and shuttle bus.

It can be seen that PasarBella is trying to create another way to relax on weekends, but its proximity to Singapore's richest Sixth Avenue district makes the price here too high, such as a few Singapore dollars for a plum at an Australian fruit stand. All kinds of small shops also seem to look like goods, once or twice is relatively fresh, but there is no desire to hang out often.

The Japanese seafood restaurant that just entered the door is very attractive, and the brightly colored seafood looks very attractive.

11. Group Therapy

Group Therapy is near the Tanjong Pagar subway station, on the edge of the CBD district, where Duxton Rd is also a feature of the old house, adjacent to Tanjong Pagar Road gathered a large number of Korean food, not far away is Chinatown. Group Therapy can also be regarded as a group of coffee shops opened earlier in Singapore, with good quality and environment, but now that Singapore cafes are clustered together, I really want to say that the characteristics are also a bit weak.

The brunch, weekend brunch is not bad in the cafe, the price is OK, and its proximity to CBD makes its weekend team less scary.

12. Penny University

Penny University is a stand-alone show on the East Coast because good coffee shops seem to be in the center of the city, clustered in Robertson Quay--CBD--Outram--Tiong Bahru and in alleys between Bugis and Little India. Kadong, where Penny University is located, is also a famous old district in Singapore, and many famous old food shops can be found here. For people who live on the East Coast, or tourists who come to Canada, if they want to drink a cup of quality Western-style coffee, they can basically go to Penny U.

The name Penny University comes from London in the 18th century, when cafes in London could enjoy coffee and the unique gathering of all sectors of society for a penny, chatting, reading newspapers, discussing current events or gossip.

Muddy Espresso

Muddy Espresso

The most famous coffee here is its Muddy Espresso, which is actually an iced latte. I haven't eaten Penny University's lunch. Dessert seems to be served by a famous local dim sum shop. I tasted a piece of lemon strawberry pie. It was good, but it was expensive.

But on the whole, I don't think Penny University is too special, especially because the music is vulgar and noisy and a little boring.

To sum up, Singapore's Western-style coffee culture is strong, and it has not yet declined for the time being. In fact, Singapore is also a very westernized country, which is basically the most westernized place in Asia. If you are here to play in Singapore, you can try the local Nanyang coffee and try one or two Western-style coffee. For more photos of coffee shops in Singapore, please move to this album:
