Coffee introduced by Taiwan businessmen spawned coffee industry in Nanjing, Fujian
Chinanews.com, Zhangzhou, Nov. 11-the three-day 2011 (Nanjing) Nankeng Coffee Culture Exchange Conference opened in Nanjing, Fujian Province on the afternoon of the 11th. People from farmers' associations and coffee industry on both sides of the strait gathered here to visit coffee culture exhibition halls and coffee processing plants to experience coffee culture and economic benefits.
The coffee industry in Nanjing was introduced by Taiwan businessmen. In 2006, Huang Wenguang, a Taiwanese businessman, transplanted Arabica coffee seedlings from Gukeng Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan, to Nankeng Town of that county and found that the quality was as good as that of Gukeng Coffee. In July 2008, after the successful application of Fujian Tulou "heritage", the tourists of Tulou are increasing day by day, and the tourism industry is becoming more and more hot. Mr. Huang realized that there would be a lot of room for development to set up a leisure tourist attraction with coffee culture as the theme in Nanjing.
At the end of that year, Huang Wenguang proposed to the local government the idea of investing in a coffee plantation, which received strong support. At the end of 2008, he invested 5 million US dollars to establish Zhangzhou Tianlu (Nankeng) coffee demonstration base in Nankeng town. at present, he has built the first 100 mu coffee sightseeing park and the first coffee planting demonstration base in Fujian Province, driving local farmers to plant 300mu of coffee. and successfully registered the trademark of "Nankeng Coffee".
At present, the coffee sightseeing park has 600 visitors a day, coffee beans are in short supply, and the annual income of coffee beans alone is 800000 yuan, and 500000 coffee seedlings are being cultivated to be provided to local farmers next year.
Huang Wenguang said that in view of the long harvest cycle of coffee, which usually takes more than three years, they will give priority to providing seedlings to local farmers free of charge, and then deduct the seedling cost after the farmers have harvested and sold the coffee. Next, he will give priority to expanding and standardizing the cultivation of coffee to build the "Nankeng Coffee" brand.
Driven by Huang Wenguang, Zhang Rencai, a villager of Nankeng Village, became one of the local coffee farmers. In the past, he specialized in growing bananas locally, but only grew coffee after losing money in 2009; now, more than an acre of coffee is growing well and is expected to have a harvest next year.
Chang Ren-Tsai said that after participating in coffee cultivation, the local government and Taiwan businessmen will organize them to participate in coffee cultivation techniques training, which "continues at present."
In order to develop and strengthen the coffee industry, under the influence of Huang Wenguang, Nankeng Town actively docked with coffee towns such as Gukeng and Dongshan in Taiwan. In 2009, Nankeng Town and Gukeng Township of Yunlin County signed an agricultural cooperation agreement to introduce improved varieties and planting techniques of Taiwan's Gukeng coffee. After that, Nankeng Town docked with the Dongshan District of Tainan, and the two sides discussed to carry out in-depth cooperation and exchanges in the coffee industry. The coffee industry in Nanjing has been included in the development plan of the modern agricultural cooperation park on both sides of the Taiwan Strait (Nanjing, Fujian).
Huang Wenguang said that the purpose of the 2011 (Nanjing) Nankeng Coffee Culture Exchange Conference is not only to boost popularity, but also to contribute to the accumulation of local coffee culture. It is hoped that with the holding of the coffee culture exchange meeting and the exchange of guests, the coffee in Nankeng will have a more humanistic flavor.
