AeroPress Brewing FAQs: Best Filters, Grind, and Temperature
If you’ve ever wondered why your AeroPress coffee tastes thin, why the metal filter gives you sludge, or whether you really need to use 80°C water, you’re not alone. These are the most frequent questions from home brewers trying to get the best out of their AeroPress — and the answers aren’t always obvious.
The short answer? Use white paper filters (not brown), grind fine to medium-fine, aim for a 1:12 to 1:16 brew ratio, and stick to water temperatures between 74–80°C. That’s the sweet spot most tasters — including pros — prefer for a balanced, smooth cup without bitterness or excessive sediment.
Filter Type: Paper or Metal?
Most coffee drinkers prefer the taste of coffee brewed through AeroPress paper filters over metal. Why? Metal filters let more coffee particles, oils, and sediment pass through, resulting in a heavier, grittier cup — closer in body to French press coffee. In blind tests, a majority of tasters consistently chose paper-filtered AeroPress brews.
As for paper filters themselves, the standard white AeroPress filters are safe and recommended. Modern white filters are bleached without dioxins — a now-banned carcinogenic chemical once used in paper processing. On the other hand, the original brown filters can release a papery taste and may contain unwanted compounds like tar. Most experienced users opt for the cleaner profile of white paper filters.
Why Does My AeroPress Coffee Taste Weak or Watery?
If your AeroPress brew feels thin or overly smooth, check these three common causes:
- Grind Size: A finer grind (closer to espresso) extracts more flavour. If you’re using a blade grinder, run it for 20–30 seconds. For a burr grinder, aim for a setting between drip and espresso.
- Dose: Use the included AeroPress scoop for best results. Underdosing leads to weak extraction.
- Taste Preference: Many drinkers accustomed to bitter coffee find AeroPress brews unexpectedly smooth and low in acidity. Try increasing coffee dose or reducing water to intensify flavour.
Do I Need a Special Grinder for AeroPress?
No — you don’t need to buy a new grinder just for AeroPress. Our tests show that even basic blade grinders work well if you adjust your technique. Grind for around 30 seconds with two scoops of coffee (that’s roughly 30g). Fine-ground coffee may clump due to static, so use a spoon to help remove it. For optimal extraction, aim for a brew time of about 20–30 seconds when pressing. Coarser grinds brew faster but often taste lighter.
Brewing Basics: Ratios, Water Temp, and Technique
Here’s how to dial in your AeroPress brew like a pro:
- Brew Ratio: Standard recommendations range from 1:12 to 1:16 (e.g., 15g coffee to 180–240ml water), but many users adjust based on preference.
- Water Temperature: AeroPress officially recommends 80°C (175°F), but our wide-ranging taste tests showed most people — from casual drinkers to experts — preferred coffee brewed between 74–80°C. That range extracts fully without excessive bitterness. Note: 93°C is typical for drip or pour-over, but AeroPress maintains even temperature during stirring and pressing.
- Why Not Just Add More Water? Some try making “AeroPress espresso” by brewing strong and diluting, similar to ristretto + hot water. But blind tests showed that full immersion followed by a proper dilution (not over-extracted) yields a smoother, better-balanced cup.

Other Common AeroPress Questions
Why does the AeroPress come with a stirring paddle?
The plastic stirring paddle helps prevent damage to the paper filter and the inside walls of the chamber. Using a regular spoon can scratch or puncture the filter — the paddle is designed to be gentle and effective.
Where can I buy more paper filters?
Every AeroPress comes with 350 paper filters — enough for months of brewing. Refill packs are widely available online, including on Taobao and other major retailers.
How can I make pressing easier?
If pressing feels hard, don’t force it. Press down 1cm, pause to let trapped air help, then continue in small steps until you hear air escape. If it’s still difficult, your grind may be too fine — shorten brew time or adjust your grinder. Blade grinders: reduce time slightly. Burr grinders: go one notch coarser.
Why does my coffee overflow when I add just 3–4 spoons of water?
This usually happens with very fresh, high-gas coffee and when using water hotter than 80°C. Try lowering the temperature to 80°C or even 85°C. If you prefer a hotter brew, reduce your water dose to 2–3 spoons to avoid bubbling over.
How do I get water to exactly 80°C?
Here are three reliable methods:
- Microwave: Heat measured water in a mug, use a kitchen thermometer (not in the microwave) to find the time needed for your usual amount. Once known, you won’t need the thermometer again.
- Boil + Cool: Mix 1 part cold water with 3 parts just-boiled water to lower temperature. For example, add cold water to 1.5 cups boiled water to reach 2 cups total (~80°C).
- Preheat Method: Pour boiling water into your cup or server, wait about 1 minute to cool slightly and preheat your vessel. Then pour the brewing water into the AeroPress. This also preps your server. Use a thermometer to confirm ~80°C.
