China Coffee First Village
In his own coffee field, Xie Xianwen carefully observed the coffee trees that would blossom in the second round, and was very worried about the decline in the production and quality of his coffee beans. Four consecutive years of drought in Yunnan and the decline in international coffee futures prices have shaken China's coffee market.
Xinzhai Village, located at the foot of Gaoligong Mountain in Yunnan Province, is known as "the first Coffee Village in China". Xie Xianwen is a "farmer" in Xinzhai village and the head of a local medium-sized coffee production company.
On April 19, the reporter and his party came to Xinzhai Village, which is located at the foot of Lujiangba in Gaoligong Mountain, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. As soon as I entered Xinzhai Village, I looked up at a series of coffee fields, stretching from the banks of the Nujiang River to Gaoligong Mountain, with several tall longan trees occasionally seen in the coffee field. Here, we met Xie Xianwen.
Gaoligong Mountain, located in the Nujiang Grand Canyon, is known as the "World Museum of Nature" and the "World species Gene Bank". Xie Xianwen told reporters, "because of the elevation of more than 4000 meters in Gaoligong Mountain and the hot and humid climate of the Nujiang Grand Canyon, Lujiang Dam has four seasons and ten miles of different days. It is one of the rare subtropical hot valleys in China, and this is also the unique advantage of growing small grains of coffee."
Xie Xianwen told reporters, "in the mid-1950s, patriotic overseas Chinese Liang Jinshan introduced the first coffee seedling in Baoshan City from Southeast Asia. In the 1960s, educated youth who supported the border areas began to grow coffee in Lujiangba on a large scale, which was mainly handed over to the state at that time.
By the early 1990s, Yunnan had become China's largest coffee export base, accounting for 95% of the country's total. At this time, the villagers in Xinzhai cut off almost all the crops except coffee and planted coffee. Xie Xianwen said that up to now, the planting area of Xinzhai coffee has reached more than 12000 mu, with an annual output of nearly 1000 tons of coffee beans, 60% of which are exported abroad. Because of this, Xinzhai is called "the first Coffee Village in China".
Xie Xianwen also started his own coffee industry in such a spring tide. I quit my job in 2000 to help my family grow coffee. In those years, the price of coffee was good, and my family did make money.
Xie Xianwen, who has a good economic vision, saw that the price of coffee raw materials was seriously affected by futures, so he invited a partner to start deep processing of coffee. "although the scale is small, the business is good."
While Xie Xianwen's coffee business was on the rise, Yunnan suffered a severe drought in 2010, when 90% of the coffee trees in Xinzhai village failed, and Xie Xianwen lost more than 500,000 yuan. Many villagers began to hesitate to give up coffee cultivation.
Xie Xianwen is not willing to leave the coffee business, but fortunately, although these coffee trees have no harvest, they are not dead. In 2010, the government invested 12 million yuan to build a water conservancy facility for Xinzhai village to build a stone noodle road and coffee cultivation. Xie Xianwen began to encourage farmers to attach importance to quality, and also encouraged villagers to drink coffee. "if you don't drink it yourself, how can you grow good coffee beans?"
Now, the impact of drought on our Xinzhai coffee cultivation is getting smaller and smaller year by year, and the normal harvest of coffee in our village has reached more than 80% this year.
