Vienna, Austria

Coffee's place in Vienna's urban culture is so important that in 2011 UNESCO declared Vienna's cafes a World Intangible Cultural Heritage. But some modern coffee connoisseurs believe these cafes are backward in coffee making technology and service. Because these cafes function as a public living room where people chat, read newspapers and eat pies. Since Vienna hosted the World Barista Championship in 2012, new styles of coffee shops have opened and espresso quality has steadily improved.

Local signature coffee: espresso and cappuccino in a new style coffee shop, or vinaigrette blend (similar to cappuccino but usually topped with cream) in a traditional coffee shop.

Top coffee shops: fashion coffee shops, espresso shops, pirate coffee. Medell Cafe serves traditional coffee and delicious cakes.
