South Korea's imports of coffee rose 18.7 percent year-on-year to 99,372 tons from January to September this year, exceeding the largest import volume since 1990 (92,040 tons) in the same period of 2011, according to statistics released by the South Korean Customs Office on the 21st. According to this trend, South Korea's coffee imports are expected to hit a record high this year.

Coffee imports jumped 21.1 percent year-on-year to $382 million in the same period. In terms of importing countries, Vietnam imported the largest amount of 23,686 tons, followed by Brazil (17,566 tons), Colombia (14,043 tons), Honduras (9219 tons) and Peru (6782 tons). Among them, imports from Colombia far exceeded last year's imports (13,581 tons), with a significant increase.

According to analysis, the reason why coffee imports have soared is mainly due to the large increase in the number of Korean coffee chains in recent years. In addition, after the entry into force of the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2012, tariffs were lowered, and coffee imports from the United States increased accordingly.

Industry analysts said that recently, the number of coffee stores at home and abroad brands showed a rapid growth trend. Coffee's popularity will continue in the short term, although more and more people are concerned about their health and drinking other drinks
