It is generally believed that top coffee can only be grown between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Cancer, and coffee is also grown in Yunnan and Hainan within 23 degrees of latitude. However, Panzhihua City, which is located in 26 °north latitude, can also produce first-class high-quality coffee beans because of its special climate and geographical conditions, but the coffee industry is only at the lowest end of the industrial chain. As early as in early 2011, the General Office of the Sichuan Provincial people's Government issued the "opinions on accelerating the Development of Tropical crop Industry", which clearly put forward the need to promote the industrialized production and management of coffee. At present, the only place where coffee can be grown in Sichuan is the dry-hot valley of the Jinsha River in Panxi.

However, if the investigation of coffee cultivation in Panzhihua can be traced back to 2007, a team of experts from the Yunnan Institute of Tropical Agricultural Sciences came to Panzhihua and Xie Peihui, the former director of the institute who has studied tropical plants for more than 50 years. Panzhihua borders Yunnan Province and has a three-dimensional subtropical dry-hot valley climate with "four seasons in one mountain and ten different days in ten miles". The geographical conditions of sufficient sunshine, abundant rainfall and mostly above 1000 meters above sea level are very conducive to the growth of coffee trees. What is even more proud of Panzhihua Coffee is that after tasting Panzhihua coffee, President Xie Peihui said, "the quality is by no means inferior to Blue Mountain Coffee."

Superior natural conditions create unlimited prospects for Panzhihua coffee

The dry-hot valley of Panzhihua Jinsha River is one of the three hot areas in China. It is the northernmost latitude and relatively high altitude hot area in China. It is recognized as the best coffee growing area in the world. Compared with hot areas such as Hainan and Yunnan, this area has many unique advantages, such as longer sunshine (2,600 hours of annual sunshine), good light quality, especially suitable air temperature (average annual temperature 20.9 ℃), higher altitude (937-1500 m), larger temperature difference (daily temperature difference > 15 ℃), more barren mountains and wasteland, so it is the most suitable area for growing small coffee. The climate and geographical conditions here are very conducive to the growth of coffee trees and the accumulation of organic matter. After years of introduction and trial, Panzhihua small seed coffee not only has a high yield, but also has been tasted by coffee experts at home and abroad, it is agreed that Panzhihua coffee has the characteristics of rich aroma, outstanding fruit taste, sour and bitter balance, long aftertaste and so on. It is one of the best coffee in the world. With the efforts of the scientific research team led by Xie Peihui and other experts, Panzhihua has successively introduced seeds and seedlings of six high-quality small-seed coffee varieties, including Dele 28, Mexico 11, India S288, Katimo 79635 and Blue Mountain, in the dry-hot valley of the Jinsha River in Panzhihua. By studying the climatic conditions, geomorphological conditions, altitude area, seedling cultivation, planting time, planting method, management, postharvest treatment and other techniques of growing coffee in the dry and hot valley, the above five coffee varieties suitable for popularization and planting were selected.

Grow first-class coffee beans under mango trees

With the support of the government and the affirmation of Yunnan experts, local farmers in Panzhihua have started their own way of growing coffee.

"under the guidance of experts, we continue to try and select high-quality coffee varieties." Chen Shiqing, general manager of Panzhihua Ertan Ecological Agriculture Company, said, "growing coffee, 'half yin and half yang" is the best sunshine condition. "the mango tree is tall, and if you plant coffee trees under the mango tree, you can skillfully create a 'half-yin and half-yang' condition."

Wang Mingjun harvested the joy of coffee beans in 2010. on average, 10 mu coffee trees produced 600jin of fresh beans per mu, which is equivalent to an extra 18000 yuan sold in the field at the market price of 3 yuan per jin. In recent years, coffee beans still have a bumper harvest, and the purchase price has gone up.

At this stage, coffee beans grown in Panzhihua are basically sold to neighboring Yunnan, and there are no enterprises for deep processing of coffee at present. The fresh beans sold to Yunnan are about 3 yuan per jin, and 5 jin of fresh beans can be made into 1 jin of dried beans. The price immediately tripled after baking, and the basic market price is 80 to 90 yuan per jin. If sold to the international market, the price can even reach 40 to 50 US dollars per kilogram.

In the future, with the continuous improvement and upgrading of Panzhihua coffee industry, more and more local coffee beans will come to the attention of the world, and at that time, it is believed that China's coffee industry will also form a tripartite situation among Yunnan, Hainan and Panzhihua.
