The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, showed that older people who drank coffee had a lower body inflammation index.
The experiment asked 100 young people and the elderly to analyze their blood samples and found that there were indeed more inflammation-related genes in the elderly. It's not surprising that inflammation increases with age; things like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, joint discomfort, and Alzheimer's disease are all associated with inflammation.
"these diseases are not just caused by aging, but chronic inflammation," explained David Furman, a consultant and assistant professor at Stanford University's Center for Immunization, Transplantation and infection. The more active the inflammatory gene in the body, the more likely it is to develop high blood pressure and atherosclerosis.
Interestingly, Foreman observed that among older people, people with fewer inflammatory genes have one thing in common: they all have the habit of drinking coffee. And people who drink more than 5 cups of coffee a day have the lowest inflammatory reaction. The researchers conducted further blood sampling and medical history assessments and concluded that caffeine may block the inflammatory pathway, which in turn reduces the body's chronic inflammatory response.
In fact, inflammatory reaction is the body's defense mechanism, can fight infection, remove toxins in the body, is not bad. But the researchers point out that as they age, the inflammatory defense mechanism will become more and more dysfunctional, leaving the body in a state of chronic inflammation, causing many chronic diseases; the goal of follow-up research is to find out when and why this mechanism fails, with a view to identifying people who may be at high risk of inflammatory diseases in the near future.
