Get more antioxidants from coffee than other diets

According to a study conducted by researchers at Scranton University in Philadelphia (Vincent and Joe), coffee is the largest source of antioxidants in the American diet, and it appears that Americans get more antioxidants from coffee than from other diets. Although vegetables and fruits are generally advocated as good sources of antioxidants, this study is shocking because it is the first to show that coffee is the primary source of antioxidants for most Americans. Vinson says it's unclear how much antioxidants the body absorbs and uses. These latest findings have been widely reported, pointing to the potential health benefits of drinking coffee. Vinson and his assistants analyzed antioxidant levels in more than 100 common foods, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices, oils and common beverages. They then compared their findings with existing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which details the average intake of various foods, and found that coffee had the highest antioxidant content per unit and the highest intake frequency. Adequate intake of an antioxidant-rich diet, including coffee, is beneficial in preventing and delaying the onset of degenerative diseases. Although some of the benefits require further study.
