China Daily, April 19 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- Vietnam is the second largest coffee exporter in the world, second only to Brazil in coffee production. Recently, however, the Vietnamese media have exposed their "family ugliness", saying that there are serious problems with coffee produced by some manufacturers.

According to reports on the website of Vietnam's Youth Daily, police in Dak Nong province recently raided a private coffee factory and found that workers mixed rotten coffee beans, battery cores, stone powder and chemicals to make coffee powder.

The police seized a large quantity of black coffee powder on the spot. The female boss realized that her actions violated food safety regulations and admitted that she had sold 3 tons of similar black-hearted coffee powder since the beginning of this year.

The police have sampled and tested the finished coffee powder.

The battery core is mainly composed of manganese dioxide, a highly oxidized compound that can cause manganese poisoning in humans by mixing 0.5 milligrams in a liter of water, said an associate professor in the chemistry department of a university in Vietnam. In addition, other heavy metals found in batteries such as lead, mercury, zinc, cadmium and arsenic are extremely toxic and can damage the brain, kidneys, cardiovascular system and fertility if drunk.

"any poisoning caused by these heavy metals will have very adverse health effects, including death," said an expert at Vietnam's National Institute of Nutrition. "
