The name of "Yejia Xuefei": Yirgacheffe and Sidamo

As the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopian coffee is famous for its unique flavor and rich coffee gene pool. Among them, Yirgacheffe, Sidamo and Harar are the most famous.

The fame of Yirgacheffe

Washed Yejia Xuefei is the most classic and can best show the beauty of boutique coffee. Unique citrus amorous feelings, even coffee beginners will not be mistaken.

In 1972, Ethiopia's first washing treatment plant was established in Yejia Sheffield. After decades of development, washed coffee has become mainstream in the western region.

Location of Yirgacheffe: the most popular version

At present, when it comes to Yejia Xuefei, most of the information goes like this: Yejia Xuefei is located in the Sidamo area, which is named after the town of Yejia Xuefei. Sidamo itself is the largest coffee producing area in Ethiopia, and among the coffee produced in this area, the Yejia Xuefei region has a unique citrus flavor, which gives it the opportunity to be named separately in addition to the place name of sidamo, and has become the darling of the boutique world under the name "Yejia Sheffield".

To explain the exact location of Yirgacheffe producing areas, part of the history of Ethiopia must be mentioned. In 1994 and 1995, the Ethiopian regime has undergone important changes, from the original socialist nature to democratic federalism.

Before 1995, before the reform, Ethiopia was divided into 13 provinces. Sidamo is one of the provinces, which includes the famous producing area Yirgacheffe. Our common saying that "Yirgacheffe is located in the middle of the Sidamo region" has something to do with this. In addition, when we mention the history of coffee, the familiar "Kafa" is also one of the 13 provinces, called "Kafa". As shown in the picture.

In 1995, the new administrative division came into effect and the whole of Ethiopia was divided into nine states and two municipalities directly under the Central Government (Addis Ababa and Dire Dava, where the capital is located). Of the nine states, the one with the greatest relationship with coffee producing areas is the "Southern ethnic State", known as Southern Nations, Nationalities and People's Region, or SNNPR, located on the southwestern border of Ethiopia. Below the state, it is divided into several zone (districts). As shown in the following picture.

Yirgacheffe, as a regional district, belongs to the Gedeo Zone of Gaideo district.

SNNPR State is the main coffee producing area in Ethiopia. Among them, Gedeo and Sidama are the main producing areas, accounting for 63% of the total output of SNNPR state and 28% of the total output of Ethiopia.

Gedeo and Sidama are both local ethnic names, both of which are the most populous people in SNNPR state, of which Sidama is the most populous ethnic group in SNNPR state, accounting for almost 20% of the state's total population. The language used by the Sidama family is called Sidamo.
