How to Use an AeroPress: Step-by-Step Home Brewing Guide
Making a great cup of coffee at home doesn’t need expensive gear or barista training. Whether you’re at your kitchen counter or in a small office nook, the AeroPress offers a fast, clean, and flexible way to brew fresh coffee—without the fuss. But getting it right means paying attention to details most people overlook.
The simplest way to brew a flavorful cup with an AeroPress is to use 17 grams of medium-ground coffee, water at 83°C, and a 1:1 brew-to-water dilution. That’s all it takes for a clean, rich extract in under two minutes.
Why Use an AeroPress for Home Brewing?
The AeroPress is beloved by coffee drinkers for its speed, portability, and consistency. Unlike pour-over or French press, it combines immersion and pressure brewing, giving you control over body, clarity, and strength. It’s ideal for making one or two cups using freshly roasted beans, especially when you want a clean cup without sediment.
What You’ll Need to Get Started
Before you begin brewing, gather these essentials:
- AeroPress coffee maker
- Electric or hand grinder
- Fresh coffee beans (17g recommended)
- Hot water (just off boil)
- Scale (optional but helpful)
- Kettle
- Coffee mug or server
Step-by-Step: Brewing Coffee with an AeroPress
1. Gather Your Tools
Set up your AeroPress, grinder, mug, and kettle. Having everything within reach helps maintain brew time and temperature.
2. Grind Your Coffee
Grind 17 grams of coffee to a medium particle size—similar to table salt. This grind allows for balanced extraction, bringing out body and subtle flavors without over-extracting bitterness. A medium grind is crucial for the AeroPress’s full-immersion style.
3. Rinse and Preheat the Filter
Insert the paper filter into the AeroPress cap, then rinse it with hot water. This removes any paper taste and preheats the brewing chamber. Discard the rinse water before adding coffee.
4. Add Freshly Ground Coffee
Place the grounds into the brewed chamber. The recommended dose is 17 grams, or about one rounded AeroPress scoop. Level the coffee bed gently.
5. Start the Bloom
Start your timer. Pour 50 milliliters (about 1/4 cup) of water at approximately 83°C over the grounds. Let it bloom for 45 seconds. This step releases trapped CO₂ and prepares the coffee for even extraction.
6. Stir the Coffee Bed
After blooming, stir the coffee three times with a spoon or paddle to ensure all grounds are saturated and there are no dry pockets.
7. Add More Water
Pour another 50 milliliters of water, bringing the total to around 100 milliliters (about 1/2 cup). The water level should sit just above the second ridge inside the chamber.
8. Attach the Filter and Plunger
While the coffee brews, screw the rinsed filter cap onto the chamber. Ensure it’s tight to prevent leaks during pressing.
9. Press the Coffee
At 60 seconds, gently turn the AeroPress 45 degrees and stir lightly for 10 seconds. Then, apply steady pressure to the plunger. The full extraction should take between 15 and 25 seconds. Avoid forcing it or letting air escape.
10. Dilute and Serve
The resulting brew is strong and concentrated. For a balanced cup, dilute it with an equal amount of hot water (a 1:1 ratio). Alternatively, adjust water volume to taste during the initial pour.
