As the first raw bean event in the world, the emergence of BOP can also be regarded as a game against the Panamanian boutique coffee industry at that time, and successfully opened up a blue ocean for Panama to win by quality through this game.

The coffee production in Panama is negligible compared with that of other big coffee countries. The international coffee market was in the doldrums in the 1990s, and the market crisis required the coffee industry to come up with new solutions. So in 1995, seven coffee production families in Panama jointly established the Panamanian Fine Coffee Association (Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, hereinafter referred to as SCAP). And in 1996 established the first Panama raw bean competition-the best Panama (Best of Panama, hereinafter referred to as BOP).

At 7: 00 a.m. on July 20, all 49 batches of award-winning coffee beans launched by BOP were auctioned for about 6 hours and 30 minutes. Among them, BOP-GN-1 Rose Summer sold for $803 / lb, breaking the record for the highest transaction price. (BOP gave birth to Super Rose Summer washing Sofia in 2017 and Sun Jade Rose Summer, which bid as high as US $601 / lb. ), is the "bid king" of this year's auction, and the winning bidder is Heijin Coffee, a raw bean trader in Taiwan.

Rose summer varieties: green leaf (Green Tip) rose summer variety and copper leaf (Bronze Tip) rose summer variety. Green leaf rose summer is characterized by floral fragrance, strong sour taste and sweet taste. On the contrary, the weight and sweetness of copper leaf rose summer are mainly, and the sour taste is not obvious.

There are 49 batches of coffee beans participating in the auction, and BOP ushered in a new grouping method in 2018. This year, it is divided into four groups: Rosa solarization (honey treatment) group, rose summer water washing group, traditional variety sun drying (honey treatment) group, traditional variety water washing group and Pacamara group.

Compared with 2017, the biggest change is that the honey treatment originally classified as the water washing group is divided into the sun exposure group.

Of the 49 BOP lots this year, Erida Manor ELIDA GEISHA GREEN TIP NATURAL, the champion of the Rose Summer category, sold for $651 per pound, or about 5464 yuan per pound.

In this auction, Alida Manor became the biggest winner. In the previous BOP raw bean competition, Arida's two coffee beans, washed rose summer and sun roses summer, both won the championship in the rose summer category, making Arida Manor the first "double crown" in the history of BOP.

The second-highest price for raw beans was taken away by Saza Coffee, a Japanese baker, at $661a pound.

In the BOP auction, Arida Manor Sun Rose Summer broke the record set by the Jade Manor last year to become the new bidder. There are 18 batches of Rose Summer in the tanning group, with the highest transaction price being the champion Arida Manor Green Top Rose Summer, with a price of $803 per pound of coffee beans and the lowest price of $51 per pound.

There are 18 batches in the water washing group, and the highest transaction price is the champion Arida Manor Green Top Water washing Rose Summer, which fetches $661 per pound of coffee beans; the lowest price is $51 per pound.

The highest transaction price of the five batches of the traditional tanning group is DUNCAN Manor, the champion of the group, with a price of $54 per pound of coffee beans and a minimum price of $27.50 per pound.

In the three batches of the traditional washing group, the highest transaction price is the champion Jade Manor, with a price of $100 per pound of coffee beans, and the lowest transaction price is $32 per pound.

The Pacamara Coffee Group has five batches, and the highest transaction price is the champion DUNCAN Manor, which fetches $70.50 per pound of coffee beans and the lowest transaction price is $36.99 per pound.

DUNCAN Manor

The ninth place in the Emerald Manor Rose Summer Group, the Red Standard Rose Summer Group, the third Red Standard Sun Rose Group, the third Rose Group, and the third Rose Group, the traditional Rose Group, sold for $140 / lb. there was not much joy in the whole auction.

Colleagues who follow the Panamanian producing areas may have noticed that there have been varying degrees of production cuts in many Panamanian estates this year, and this impact has also spread to this year's BOP competition. A total of 163 beans were submitted to participate in the competition in 17 years, compared with 130 this year, a decrease of 20%.

For large estates, they can still compete as usual, while for estates that are already small and affected by reduced production, there may not be enough coffee to compete (SCAP requires at least 150lb of raw beans per batch). Such as several champion estates in the history of BOP, high-quality estates such as mule manor (Finca La Mula), Sofia manor (Finca Sophia) and Finca Nuguo manor (Finca Nuguo) did not participate in this BOP (source GrandCru AAa worker aAA).

Alida Manor in Panama

Elida Estate

The history of the farm dates back to 1918. The farm was owned by the Lamastus family, and the name of the farm, Elida Alida, was the name of the then farmer, Mrs. Robert Louis Lamastus. Elida Manor is located in the Boquete producing area, the elevation of the manor is almost the highest in Panama, and nearly half of the area is in the National Conservation Park, is a rare ultra-high altitude manor in Central America!

Elida Manor has a total area of 65 hectares, more than half of which are located within the Baru Volcano National Park, 30 hectares of the estate are planted with coffee trees, and the remaining 35 hectares are virgin forests. Coffee is grown from 1670 to 1850 meters above sea level, making it one of the two highest coffee farms in Panama (the other estate with these elevations should be Carmen in the Vulcan Valley).

There are three main varieties planted in Elida Manor, namely, Catuai (Kaduai), Typica (Iron pickup) and Geisha (Rose Summer). The processing plant of the manor is halfway up the hillside. After the coffee is picked, it can be transported to the factory for processing as soon as possible to ensure that the quality of the coffee fruit is not affected. Of course, Elida's environment is also suitable for growing other high-quality temperate crops, especially tree tomatoes and some uncommon high-altitude fruits, which are interestingly often found in Elida coffee.

Mr. Wilford, the owner of the estate, in addition to the extremely strict treatment of coffee cultivation, the "purification" after the processing of raw beans is also more stringent than those in the same industry. Alida of Panama, for example, needs to go through more than 5 months of low-temperature Resting to remove green after raw beans are processed, so that the flavor of coffee can be more balanced and full development.
