Compared with other producing areas, Yunnan youth have both advantages and obvious disadvantages.

Here, especially the young farmers (the second generation) are very willing to innovate and experiment, whether it is the upgrading of varieties, the innovation of processing methods or the renewal of basic equipment. The most obvious is that some new coffee varieties have been planted locally in Yunnan in recent years, and new treatments have become popular-such as honey treatment.

But in Yunnan, the obvious deficiency is the lack of professional knowledge and rich experience. As the history of coffee cultivation in Yunnan is still short, and now it is only the second generation of farmers engaged in this cause, there is a lack of experience inheritance and professional knowledge transfer. Fortunately, the local government and international training institutions continue to organize relevant training programs to make up for the deficiency.

Investment to promote the Development of Coffee Industry in Yunnan

Since the late 1980s, Nestl é has seen the potential of coffee production in Yunnan and hopes to support the government's poverty alleviation program, where it has invested a lot of money. It began to buy Pu'er Coffee in 1992 and then began to provide technical assistance to local coffee farms in 1994. By 2002, the proportion of Nestl é buying Yunnan coffee beans directly from farmers reached a peak. Over the past few decades, Nestl é has also established an experimental demonstration coffee farm and built a Nestle Coffee Center in Pu'er.

It is undeniable that Nestl é has always been an important participant in the acquisition and production of Pu'er coffee, and has provided a lot of resources and tools for farmers who want to engage in coffee cultivation and production.

Recently, Starbucks has also invested in the region. A coffee grower support center was opened in Pu'er in 2012 and made significant contributions to agricultural communities through the China Poverty Alleviation Foundation in 2018. After years of local efforts, Starbucks released its first single-origin Yunnan coffee in 2017.

At the same time, the local government is also increasing investment, drawing attention to Yunnan coffee at the international level. In 2003, Pu'er launched the China Coffee Industry Federation, which was later renamed Pu'er Coffee Association. In 2014, Yunnan International Coffee Trading Center was established to support the trade of raw coffee beans in China, doing a lot of work to develop farmers' support programs and infrastructure updates, and to implement quality control and grading systems.

Since the push in the late 1980s, total Arabica production in China has grown exponentially-an average of nearly 20 per cent a year, according to the Yunnan International Coffee Trading Center. At the same time, coffee companies, large and small, are flocking to the area.

There is still potential in the coffee profession.

With the expansion of Yunnan's large coffee industry, boutique coffee has also developed vigorously in Yunnan-although it still accounts for less than 10% of the total coffee production.

Last year, China was the portrait country of the Fine Coffee Association's Annual Fair (SCA). There, the Yunnan International Coffee Trading Center announced a partnership with CQI to develop 10 model farms in Yunnan, dedicated to improving coffee quality through improved agricultural and processing practices.

Shu Yang, general manager of Yunnan International Coffee Trading Center, said: "so far, the results of our work have been very promising. The Q score of the best coffee in China is comparable to that of the most famous coffee in the world." We believe that through continued efforts, the proportion of Yunnan boutique coffee and its links with the international market will increase. "

Some roasters flocking to Yunnan are particularly interested in emerging professional markets where they can find new and exciting coffee beans. But some skeptics question Yunnan's potential in the professional field, and indeed, the stability of the quantity and quality of Yunnan coffee beans has been criticized by the market.

These problems arise mainly because farmers "have never really learned how to produce high-quality coffee." Therefore, part of the cooperation between Yunnan International Coffee Trading Center and CQI is to help farmers improve the stability of quality. In addition to teaching farmers how to grow boutique coffee, it is also important to tell them how to ensure the consistent quality of each batch of coffee beans.

In addition, there is also a lack of quality control standards for systematic boutique coffee in Yunnan. Yunnan coffee traders have been working with farmers for years to improve quality control and are committed to producing large quantities of boutique coffee. But there is still a long way to go, especially to promote and strive to implement better quality control parameters, and to provide training to improve quality.
