Brief introduction of Qianjie-Ethiopian Coffee production and Sidamo Coffee characteristics

Ethiopia, the largest coffee producer in Africa, is undergoing production and marketing reforms and its production is likely to quadruple within five years. In recent years, as the productivity of old trees has declined, the country is replacing old ones and cutting down obsolete ones to allow new stems to sprout. The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority said this could help increase production to 1.2 million to 1.8 million tons by 2024, which could be higher than the existing harvest of 600000 tons.

According to the authorities, old trees account for about 60% of the 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) of trees produced, and another 1.5 million hectares have not yet produced coffee beans, which will take about three to four years to start production. A bag of 60 kilograms of coffee beans, which has reached 7.1 million bags in the past year, will be relatively optimistic if new trees are put into production and planted in the next five years. But at the same time, climate change and impact is also a long-term issue that all of us have to face.

The Ethiopian government and a number of non-governmental organizations and research centres are helping to implement these changes. Adugna Debelabot, director-general of the Ethiopian government, said in a recent interview in Kigali, Rwanda: marketing reforms are helping producers skip certain stages of the supply chain. This will help increase the income of farmers who currently earn about 60% of the price of coffee, he said. At the same time, he said that under the new reform, farmers can export directly and freely, and Ethiopia is also actively creating awareness for farmers, which will be achieved in the current production year.

At the same time, Ethiopia exports most of its coffee beans to Europe and the United States, and tries to open up new markets in Asia, especially China, South Korea and Japan. China is likely to account for half of Ethiopia's shipments, he said.

Sidamo Sidamo

Altitude: 1400 to 2200 m

Harvest time: October to January of the following year

Variety: native variety

Located in the fertile highlands of the East African Rift Valley, Sidamo is one of the three registered coffee producing areas in Ethiopia, with ample rainfall, suitable temperature and fertile soil.

About 60% of the coffee beans produced here are washed and processed. Sidamo Coffee is famous for its rich flavor, mellow body, bright acidity, floral and citrus flavors, and is popular with coffee fans who like fruity and rich aromas. This area also produces some of Ethiopia's highest coffee.

Gift of knowledge: at present, Ethiopia still uses traditional planting methods: artificial care of coffee trees, always following the principle of not using harmful pesticides and herbicides, and replacing it with organic fertilizers (mainly deciduous leaves, withered grass and animal manure, etc.). It has the reputation of the only pollution-free green organic coffee in the world. Due to different planting methods, coffee can be divided into three types: forest-semi-forest coffee (Forest or semi-forest coffee), courtyard coffee (Garden coffee) and plantation coffee (Plantation coffee).
