This may have originally been a selling point made by some businessmen in Southeast Asia to market the coffee beans with distinctive shapes.

Although there is no distinction between male and female coffee beans, in fact, there are two different forms of coffee beans, and they are the result of the same variety (a tree). Therefore, people call this rare oval spherical coffee beans "Peaberry", which translates to "round beans", while the coffee beans we see every day are called "flat beans".

How do round beans come into being?

The particle size of round beans is usually slightly smaller than that of flat beans of the same variety. If the particle size of flat bean is about 16-18 mesh, the particle size of round bean is about 14-15 mesh.

Of course, in addition to round beans with one fruit and two beans with one fruit, and triangular beans with three beans with one fruit, they are usually treated as dysplastic defective beans and are rare in ripe beans.

Is the flavor of round beans better than flat beans?

Producers such as Kenya, Tanzania, Jamaica and Hawaii specially select round beans to sell separately, and the price is not cheap.

On the other hand, some people will associate the price, output and unique shape together, and the flavor must be better than those "ordinary people"! In fact, there is not much difference in flavor between round beans and flat beans from the same area and the same breed. The reason why some producing countries sell round beans separately is that the grading systems of these countries differ to some extent according to the size of coffee beans. The bigger the particles, the more expensive they are. The size of the round bean itself is smaller than that of flat beans, and it will be reduced to the level of 14-15 mesh in the classification, and singled out, coupled with the story of less production, the price can be raised to 17-18 goal level.

Of course, from the baking point of view, coffee beans with small and uniform particle value are easier to bake evenly and have a better flavor, which is also an advantage of round beans.
