Front Street-Nicaragua Coffee Introduction

Nicaragua is located in the central part of Central America, bordering Honduras in the north, Costa Rica in the south, the Caribbean Sea in the east and the Pacific Ocean in the west, with a total area of 130,400 square kilometers. Nicaragua north central highland; eastern coastal plain, more jungle marshes, low-lying; western coastal lowlands, its east more volcanoes, lakes. Nicaragua plain high temperature and rainy, belongs to tropical marine climate; western coastal lowlands, precipitation is significantly less than the east, and there are dry and wet seasons, belongs to tropical steppe climate; central highlands annual average temperature 18℃, annual precipitation 1500-2500 mm, May-December for rainy season.

Nicaragua is an economically backward agricultural country and one of the poorest countries in Central America. Coffee is the pillar industry of Nicaragua, producing nearly 100,000 tons of coffee beans every year. Due to its poor economic base, the coffee industry is still relatively backward, and compared with its neighbor Costa Rica, its production and reputation are weak. However, Nicaragua coffee of high quality ranks among the top coffee beans in the world and enjoys a reputation.

In 2013/2014, Nicaragua faced an outbreak of coffee rust, a fungal disease affecting coffee leaf growth that reduced coffee production by approximately 25 per cent. In order to address this problem, the Government of Nicaragua, in coordination with the private sector, adopted a law (Law 853) in December 2013 to transform the coffee industry in Nicaragua by establishing a fund to finance the transformation and maintenance of coffee plantations over the coming years. One of the long-term objectives of the coffee sector in Nicaragua is to double coffee production over the next decade by renovating old coffee plantations.

Nicaragua's planting conditions are no less than those of Central American countries. The coffee produced is characterized by balanced taste. What is amazing is that the coffee produced by small farmers has the clean, bright, sour and soft flavor of Costa Rica coffee when roasted lightly, and the thick, sweet and mellow taste of Colombia coffee when roasted deeply.
