Coffee cultivation in Papua New Guinea began with seeds imported from Jamaica's famous Blue Mountain region in 1937. This tradition has not disappeared in today's Papua New Guinea coffee, and its flavor characteristics still show similarities with old-fashioned Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

Coffee plant varieties grown in New Guinea include Blue Mountain Coffee (Cofea Arabica var.Blue Mountain), Katimo (Cofea Arabica var.Catimor), Coffa Arabica var.Caturra (Coffa Arabica var.Caturra) and Mundo Novo (Arabica Coffee Hybrid Mundo Novo).

Also growing in Papua New Guinea is Arusha Coffee, an Arabica coffee variety, which is a typical or French missionary variety.

A good New Guinea coffee, such as Arona or Sigri, has a moderate, low richness, sometimes earthy taste.

Typically wet processed (washed), a delicate New Guinea coffee has a deep size and well balanced, mild, mellow, but a wide range of flavors offer a bright and clean flavor-a classic, subtle sweetness and exotic, complex and fruity aromas. The coffee produced in this area contains a lot of oil and comes out as early as when it is roasted at a moderate level.

Arona Coffee is one of the most famous coffees in Papua New Guinea. It is moderate, comfortable, fruity and well balanced.
