Black tea production technology improves the Scottish elements of British black tea promotes the development story of Assam black tea
Jackson was one of Scotland's great innovators and it was he who made the widely used term "English tea" misleading and silly.
The following is an excerpt from a book from the 1930s (All About Tea, volume 2, 1935, William Harrison Ukers), in which he recounts an anecdote about an opportunity he stumbled upon to drive the industrialization of tea in Assam.
Jackson is British, but not English, and he is one of many Scots who should appear in the Tea Hall of Fame:
Robert Fortune: The strategy of anthropological fieldwork and informal imports into Assam broke Chinese control over tea cultivation. It's a much better word than espionage and smuggling.
Bruce Brothers: A variant of Assam tea tree has been discovered. It took them years to convince tea authorities that the plant grew well and that the Chinese did not.
James Taylor: Founded and established the entire Ceylon tea industry in 1867.
Lionel Davidson: Assam tea plantation manager who invented almost everything Jackson didn't, and whose patented Scirocco dryer, tumble, packer, cutter and sorter became as standard as Britannia. (And propeller fans, which revolutionized factory working conditions, mining and ships, belt rivets, World War I munitions manufacturing machines and tennis clubs.)
Thomas Lipton: Originally a grocer, he was the creator of the integration of tea production and retail, and the founder of the most famous brand in history. The impact on everyday life was as profound as Sam Walton's.
All Scots, self-made, non-aristocratic, talented, tenacious. English breakfast tea originated in Edinburgh, Scotland.
At the end of the 19th century, 8000 Jackson's British tumblers and dryers produced the output of 1.5 million workers. In 1872, Assam's production cost was 11 pence per pound, completely uncompetitive with Chinese exports. By 1912, the figure was less than three pence. Reduce the amount of wood needed to make charcoal from one eighth of a pound of tea to one quarter. Daily rolling yield of regular garden increased from 80 pounds to 500 pounds. China exported 70 million pounds of tea to Britain in 1872 and 150,000 pounds in 1912. Assam's population grew from zero to 219 million.
They also show how deeply divided the artisanal tea industry and agribusiness are. The key distinction is which stage of tea making is mechanized and which is dependent on skilled workers. This has a big impact on both quality and price, so it's important to know what kind of wine you're thinking about drinking or drinking regularly.
There are many reasons to be concerned about scrolling. First of all, this is the main source of cost. Second, the cost comes from labor. Third, the process is manual and routine, independent of judgment and selectivity. This last point is absolutely central to the trade-off between labor and machine, both then and now.

Assam tea production process | what does rolling oxidation mean? The Historical Story of Rolling Machine
Jackson's innovation and many subsequent related innovations stand out in two aspects: first, they are not automated; second, the process they created has had a great impact. Jackson's contribution was to greatly improve the critical rolling stage in black tea production. This stage is after the tea is picked and withered. Suitable ductility, moisture and blade structure can be obtained by rolling.
