What is the meaning of 74110, 74158 and other digital beans in Arabica coffee beans?
Among thousands of different kinds of coffee beans, it is inevitable that some beans have special names! Unlike most beans, such as bourbon and tin pickup, they have conventional names, but like secret spies, they have their own numbers.
(upper left) for example, beans named with letters and numbers have: SL28 of Kenya, SL34; of Costa Rica, or H1 or F1 of Costa Rica. But when it comes to varieties full of numbers, the first thing that comes to mind must be Ethiopia's series of numbers starting with seven! So the question is, what does it mean behind this string of numbers?
The origin of "digital beans" Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, where there are tens of thousands of coffee has not yet been officially named. Because, the quantity is really too big! The time it takes to test and verify one by one is simply unimaginable! Therefore, the local government decided to use the "native species" (Heirloom) to call them collectively.
On the one hand, it is convenient, on the other hand, it is to protect these varieties! After all, as a place of origin, coffee practitioners from all over the world will naturally compete to get it, just like the story of Rose Summer and Rose Summer 1931! The number series at the beginning of 7 is a series of beans that take off the "native species" and get a new name! The story dates back to 1970. In 1970, a disease against coffee spread in Ethiopia. The infected coffee fruit will lose its original beautiful color, turn gray and black, and then die on the branches, a disease known as Coffee Berry Disease (CBD).
Once the coffee tree is contaminated, it will cause great losses to the farmers! As a result, farmers began to use chemical drugs to prevent and fight these diseases, although there is a certain effect, but still belong to spraying pesticides, cure the symptoms rather than the root of the problem. So, people started to change their plans! That is to find natural varieties with strong disease resistance. Since 1973, the coffee agriculture research center in Ethiopia, JARC, has targeted 15 regions for the collection of coffee beans. Until 1975, a total of 639 samples of different coffee varieties were collected, and then they were tested in scientific and technological identification and planting. Finally, in 1978, out of the 639 samples, 13 beans stood out. They not only have resistance to CBD, but also have high yield, drought tolerance and very good flavor performance.
In this way, JARC classifies some beans as "1974/1975CBD-Rexistent Selections". They are: 741,75227 in Gera, 74110, 74112, 74140, 74148, 74158, 74165in ashi, 744,7440,7454 and 7487 in Gera, and finally in Wush Wush. Here, 74thumb 75 refers to the year in which it was found, and the numbers followed by 74Unip 75 are their respective numbers! The popularity of these numbered beans in recent years is due to the Ethiopian Excellence Cup "Cup of Excellence", referred to as Coe. Because the name of the variety will be announced at the end of the excellent Cup, when announcing the award list, people found that only three of the top 10 were traditional tin cards, and the remaining seven beans were all digitally coded! Oh, oh, just fight the first World War! "Ka people" from various countries are scrambling to buy, just want to explore the delicacy of series 74.
But at the beginning, not to mention abroad, even their own people at home are not quite sure where it came from. The growers of the 74165 beans that won the championship did not know that it was 74165 at the beginning, but the association verified its plant when it was submitted, and it was found that it was the 74165 variety of that year.
